Did the math; 3 HP per cubic inch is the new standard...

Not bad for naturally aspirated!

I'm sure. The 5.0 bore space is headed in the right direction. Everything becomes bigger in the motor, much better platform. I've wrenched on a 5.300 motor. quite a bit and I just could never understand why the marine world is so far behind. You basically end up with a crankshaft that looks like a crank out of a diesel, plenty of room for 1"plus lifters, big bore, intake ports without pushrods interference and the list goes on. The only thing left is to get rid of the pushrods and then you'll really have a killer motor.

Think the 1350merc are sending these pushrod motors out to graze in a field like cows.

Never going to see that much HP naturally aspirated in a boat unless you have a multispeed transmission.

Old article but good read:

Thank God. Now they just have to get rid of the camshafts for electronically operated valves and we will really be in buisness.

Just asking what was the highest hp ZUL marine motors back in the day had. At one time he seemed on the marine side to having what others set their goals at for hp and bullet proof. If I recall he had a lot motors out on pump gas as well at least 20 years ago.

Don't get me wrong it awesome to watch the evolution of more powerful marine motors, however I don't see the same progression in drives to actually handle that power, I'd say a 6 drive would have a limited life expectancy behind a 2000hp motor (and however much torque it produces), like having a 2000hp car and only mildly upgraded brakes.

Richie had several N/A packages as well as blown. Back in the day I believe he listed his biggest power as 950-1000. That was with 1071 blowers and carburetors. He than went away from carburetors entirely. I'm not sure what horsepower those motors were listed as. But, I guess the answer to the question was he has built 950-1000 horsepower motors for years. And yes they were/are durable.

Point taken on power but you are comparing a drag motor to boat motor.. By the time most boats plane they would have run numerous passes... Morris builds a great drag motor and sonny's .. Ahhh ... We will leave it at that... I think the real point that is being missed is that it is relatively new technology in the marine industry outside of the 1350/1650 and most in the industry know how long those last. Goodwin does not buy a block, heads, intake, oil pan from other manufactures they design and build everything in house.. Time will tell how much of pounding they will take soon enough..

If anybody can make it go boom, it's you Bill. And thats not in any way a slam. You run your stuff hard and fast. If it lives in your boat, these guys are on to something.

And I agree... if you want a pit crew around to do engine swaps every 10 hours, buy Mercury.

Guys, I believe there is more to this motor than what you are seeing at the dragstrip.

There is not much detail about it on the website, other than them mentioning that they make the block, heads, and a bunch of other parts in house for them. That in of itself should generically tell you that they are not identical to other companies parts for this type of motor.

If i remember correctly from another article and picture a while back, the heads have a plate on the exhaust side which covers a chamber that feeds cooling water or coolant thru the exhaust port area. That in of itself tells me there is a lot of things they've done to make it more 'offshore marine' friendly than your 6-7 second drag cars.

Would like to see/here more, but I'm sure they don't want to give everything away.

Would love to hear reports of these being used 'out in the field.'
