Hi folks ,
Maybe a easy question but...

From the photo.. can you identify what transmission is connected to this motor? Also would anyone know anything about this type of transmission ?
The engine is a big block mercury racing motor from approximately 1990.

thanks a million!

Like Mike said its a plug in for a speed master 3/4/5 10-18 velvet drive could be modified by Huber marine or bam marine.

Could be a stock Borg 72c, looks like the engine is a 420 merc

The transmission ID plate should be located if I remember correctly under the starter (left side, on top of the trans) ?

next IMO it looks like what merc use to call this transmission a Velvet Drive (Borg Warner 72 CR) could be wrong - going back some years now, off the top of my head.

If the trans ID plate is under starter it should have listed the Model #, gear ratio, serial # and ID plate model color code if any of this is still readable.

Thanks for the insight, I will look on the unit for a plate with any numbers or info.
This velvet drive...is it a good trans?.. great type of unit? ...common application ?..

Thanks so much for your expertise everyone.

Yeah kinda common. Like every boat with Ssm, 3,4,5,6's unless they have crash boxes, and any tr or trs boat with a 370,400,420 or bigger power.
