Perhaps it wasn't 2 to 3's ?

Sgro's OL 43 would have ate 2 to 3's and spit them back out !

Sorry to hear all had to turn back.... Tomorrow doesn't look any better...

We are waiting to hear directly from the crews...... as to the exact reasons for each boat's problems.

As soon as we can confirm from each boat we will post here or start a new thread to review the race.

We had a quick unofficial HORBA board meeting last night with Billy Frenz, Bob Saccenti and myself, regarding the future of the race and the reasons we are not drawing more entrants.

Some possible ideas for the future:

1.) Keep the current class breakdown by length.
2.) Engines remain free until someone starts to dominate then we would restrict. (As you can see getting a reliable engine package for long distance races is not as easy as it looks.)
3.) Reduce the length of the races until people become more comfortable with this style of racing again.
4.) Create an actual Historic class to encourage the restoration of the old boats.

So one idea that was thrown out and tossed around was.

Next summer, hold three races in the NorthEast. One each in June July and August.
Three different locations using some of the old courses and adding a new one.
Develop a different entry fee system.

So 2016 could look like this:

CLASSES:

Class A 43 to 55 feet
Class B 36 to 42 feet
Class C 30 to 35 feet
Class D 18 to 29 feet
Class H Historic

Class A & B would run a race distance of no less than 110 miles 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards
Class C & D would run a race distance of no less than 80 miles 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards
Class H Historic would run a race distance of no less than 60 miles (allHistoric size boats run togther for a participation award.

Examples only of 2016 races in the Northeast

June - Massachusetts - Use the old Gloucester race course.
July - Rhode Island - Develop new ocean course. Start Newport to Marthas Vineyard to Nantucket to Newport.
August - Connecticut - Old Saybrook - To Port Jefferson, Montauk, Block Island, to Old Saybrook.

Brownie....looks like Joe Sgro and the Outerlimits are running again, but at reduced speed.

The other three boats have withdrawn, Billy is waiting to hear exactly why.

A historic class would be awesome. Count me in if you create that class.

the boats took the flying start just before 7:30AM. wind was from the northeast about 5mph and variable.the seas where light and as predicted less than 1ft. they where able to run into the triple digits off the start. truly nobody had a clue what was about to unfold.

as the boats headed out into the open sound they where greeted with the results of the 20 knot north wind overnight. 6-8 ft where common and the wave pattern was breaking over the side and bow in a washing machine action. holes had developed and reduced the fleet.to 30-40 knots. the OL was out front and the cats gave chase. the task was incredible and one by one they turned for port. the water conditions and mechanical gremlins proved too much for all but the worlds fastest V bottom boat.

the OL team soldiered on overcoming the water conditions and a host of issues along the way.

a big contrats to the OL team that refused to quit and ran one of if not the most impressive race i have ever witnessed.

all of the racers to a man said the exact same thing. they got the **** beat out of them and it showed in their body language and faces.

i have some pics and vids i can upload in a few days when i get home.

Well at least now I understand why they race within eyesight of the starting line these days.

I would like to see a race held somewhere on the Great Lakes.

Maybe a buffalo to Detroit or something of the like.
