Re-Build or Re-Fresh

Guys
As bad as I hate to admit it, my wife asked me this question and I did not know the correct answer. What is the difference between an engine rebuild and a refresh?? I know one will involve more parts and $$$. But, at what point is it a rebuild and not a freshen up ??

Thanks, David

I would have to put it like this.....

A freshen would most normally be new bearings, seals, minor machine work and maybe valve grinding.

A rebuild would be after you were leaving your favorite hangout and hold it wide open for a while then all of a sudden.......BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!

Maybe this will help??

To me refresh wouldn't really involve bottom ends. Basically I would put refresh in top end work and rebuilds would include bottom ends. That's how my brain hears it.

Many things to many people. For us old guys it used to mean using the crank/ rods/ Pistons (if the bore is ok), valves and just putting new rings. Bearings, valve job, valve springs in.

I know some would cring but when we were young and broke we would label where the lifters came out and reuse or resurface them at the machine shop where my buddy's dad was a tool maker.

Sorry didn't mean to make you feel older!!

And I concur with your statement about reusing lifters and marking them.

I agree with this.
I will add that a refresh is done prior to going boom, all cylinders have good compression, and you are basically just replacing the worn parts (rockers, springs, guides, etc.)

Thanks for the input guys. That's kinda what I thought also. I have he 525 out. It did not go boom!!!! Just some blow by. The plan is to strip it down all the way and use the crank, rods, and pistons. If still good. New valve springs and rockers for sure....
