Power is comparable to other manufacturers exotic powerplants. We can boost up or down depending on needs and fuel.
I'll get some photos when they're finish plumbed and ready for install. At this time we're making sure temps and water flow are good. also trying some different cams, tuning , boost levels etc.
These were done last fall but for Key West we decided to stick with the proven Stotler blower engines. These had very little dyno time and we were only weeks from the big show.
Why take chances? Do it right, test for every scenario and hopefully these new units will be as reliable as the previous propulsion.
We're very excited by the results and hope this will offer our colleagues an option that is straight forward, user friendly and can be serviced cost effectively by any knowledgeable tech.

Good stuff!!! Which water cooled turbos are you using?

Alex And Ani sponsored me and although they aren't renewing the contract for 2015 I'll be forever grateful for their generosity and support.
Carolyn Rafaelian is the company founder.
Yes the Platinum is mine, I'm from RI. We spoke years ago about your turbine cat.

Yes i still owe you a boat Ride!
i will pm you when the weather brakes up here.
I saw your boat in KW couple years ago
was one of my favorites. Off the Charts!!!
I would love to get you to bring her to our Borden lite poker run or maybe our Fairhaven run.
There great Charity runs and a Blast.
Carolyn used to be a client of my wife's old Salon Dellaria in Garden city.
Alex and Ani are her children's names if i recall.
I look forward to seeing your progress with the new Turbo charged engines.
Hang on and be safe!

It's all custom one off.
Bobby Cazzani designed the basic system. He and our friend Ray Leathers fabbed the units and Herb Stotler consulted, assisted, cleaned it up, figured it out and is presently working with it on his dyno.
Herb is meticulous about things. He made some improvements and so far so good.
A quote from Herb "If it don't catch fire or blow up it should run pretty good" Well said buddy.

Thanks, for the compliment and the invitation. I watched your thread on turbine service and was amazed.
Depending on race schedule and transport I definitely want to attend your poker runs.
Last year we headed over on my brother's boat but had a brand new alternator fail. We had to abort, electric pump losing fuel pressure but we did head over to Newport for a short cruise. Thank God for two great batteries!

aex 02-27-2015 09:26 AM

The motor did not like yesterday's camshaft.
Herb is testing cams that will provide increased valve train stability and longevity without sacrificing power and torque. (too much)
Our race motors are inspected and maintained on a strict schedule but in a pleasure application he wants to keep maintenance and expenses at a minimum.

Interesting for sure. We're learning a lot.
There are other marine turbos out there but I don't really see much about them,.

who's designing your cam shafts?

Two major companies who don't sponsor me so they'll remain unnamed.
It's all in the grind anyway. Several manufacturers can supply good stuff when you know what you want.

1380/1645. Just scratching the surface.
Working on more fuel delivery volume, only ran it to 6500. Need to pick up the torque.
All systems go.
Stotler Racing & Custom Marine. Testing, learning.
Quad turbos for the Platinum.

A little background.
I'm petty good with wrenches but my brother Bobby is better. He can build things and can weld anything. He has patience.
Collectively we own several turbocharged vehicles that were built here in our facility and have done a few over the years. One of our early projects ('93 ish) was building a twin turbo set up for my 1991 Ferrari 348. It was impressive.
I raced boats in the 80's and 90's, had some successes, a few failures, a few regrets and made countless friends.
When I bought the Platinum in 2013 my plan from the beginning was to go turbo. The Supercharged Stotler 1400's have performed flawlessly and finished seven consecutive races with no failures, however we like to experiment.
More later, back to work.

aex 03-07-2015 12:07 PM

More background.
Herb Stotler, Levi Santana, Brady Bragg. The pulse of Stotler Power.
Herb has a lifetime in the performance boat industry. His engines have won numerous world and national championships.
Stotler Racing manages my team and several others. They maintain every system on the boat, trailer and hauler. This facility is home to some of the most exotic boats in the world.
Our Turbo systems were fabricated in 2014. We installed one on our Unlimited engine and hit the dyno in that September. The best result was 1348/1587. Ran it to 6700.
At this time we decided to bolt the blowers back on for Key West. Dyno statistics are a great tool, however with no time to adequately sea trial we felt waiting would be prudent. Herb liked everything but felt we should increase water volume ( even though temps were not a problem ), eliminate a spacer and just generally condense a few items which Herb expertly handled.
When dyno testing, we run the full marine exhaust, the boat's fuel pumps, coolers etc. This keeps everything consistent. After the 1645 @ 6500 run last week Herb concluded we need more fuel, so bigger pumps are on the way. With the added fuel volume we will see gains.
All systems are presently functioning as intended but still testing and learning.

Can you take a picture of the plumbing of the turbos? Trying to tell from the pics you posted how you guys plumbed 4 turbos on there. Honestly looks to only be two which would make it a twin turbo, correct???

Yes, correct, twin turbo. I dubbed the Platinum Quad Turbo.
I couldn't fathom the idea of trying to stuff four on each motor. Even though the hull is almost 12 feet wide the actual motor space is limited because of sponson dimensions.
Thank you for making this observation and commenting.

aex 03-08-2015 12:45 PM

And more background.
It's winter, 2012. The crew is hanging at the shop after work enjoying some refreshments and doing a little bench racing. Topic of discussion? How to power my brother's recently acquired 32 Superboat mono.
After much debate it was decided. Take one of the 540's we had on the shelf and twin turbo it. (Had the refreshments been hot chocolate we probably would have gone blower) Being a single engine hull it was an ideal turbo candidate because volumes of space exist and it had a stout drive.
Once exhaust manifolds were specd and turbo size calculated the orders went in. Fabrication commenced in May '12. This was a pretty big undertaking, Bobby had to build many one off components. Fortunately he has a Bridgeport, lathe, planers, welders you name it and by August she was breathing.
Once sea trials commenced everything was working pretty well. Big problem, props! We tested a few but with a New England winter approaching the vessel went into storage.
Spring 2013 back to props. Ironically enough my brother buys a pair of wheels from Miss Geico Racing and sure enough one does the trick. The boat has performs flawlessly, and I buy the 42 Platinum Cat from my old buddy Herb Stotler. Herb has no idea where we're heading with the former Cintron/Superheat. We briefly discussed the Superboat's propulsion and he was intrigued. I wanted to see more test miles on her before even contemplating another marine turbo. Fast pleasure boats rarely run at full load, race boats however are at full load probably 75% of the time or even more in dead calm conditions. This changes things for sure.
After 2 1/2 seasons of use no failures have occurred other than an alternator. It was tuned in the boat on 92 octane using EGT. We could run 87 if we had to as long as we dial a little boost out of it. The motor has never been dynoed but I'm pretty sure it makes more power than Superboat ever thought someone would put in a 32 and more power than Merc thought any one would put to a #5.

Where are we? Still learning.
Herb has done numerous pulls, extended runs at different settings and all looks well.
We tried cams, different fuels and boost levels. It runs well no matter how you set it, so the basic system is sound. We are presently brainstorming, trying to predict what could be a stumble and make adjustments before a stumble occurs. A leakdown test and basic engine inspection showed no abnormal degradation. We are all very excited.
Much to my dismay we are not going to max it out on the dyno. It was collectively decided to test and tune for performance/driveability in intended realm of operation. It makes no sense to push way beyond what the hull, drives and throttleman can manage! Besides these are my only two engines!

In the boat for sure.
Heroes or zeros, time will tell. Pray for us please.
Herb is making some minor changes to the plumbing and then final testing. Presently the drives, gimbals etc are off and awaiting service which Brian at Offshore handles. Boat should be back at Stotler's in 3 weeks, then reassembly will commence. We are going to test on Lake Lanier.
Anybody have a good deal on some low rake #6 five blades 33 to 36 pitch?

Finally! The Platinum will be at Stotler's in a few hours.
The Turbos are looking good. We will test on Lake Lanier and intend to debut the boat at SBI's Pensacola event the weekend of 8/23.
If any one has interest in a pair of these monsters give Stotler a call.

Here is an early dyno sheet.
We've since garnered improvements however in the boat we're probably going to run them at 12.5 lbs ,1350/1550 to save the drives.
