Engine building timeframe.... Why rush it???

As I keep going on my engine build and now it's March, I get asked daily "when you gonna be done??" Will you be in water by beginning of may?? Stuff like that... I pay cash for parts as I make it so that slows me down nothing else, I see so many guys try to make that April or May timeframe, or poker run and rush it, screw up or cheap out to finish... Is it worth it??? Anyone else notice this or get asked all the time???

Fyi I used to be that guy that rushed for season to start and slam it together, I learned the hard way it does not pay off...

They build a motor from the ground up and have it on the dyno in less than 30 minutes on Horsepower TV. Get with the program!!!

I never rush my projects. I enjoy the project phase of owning my toys, so rushing completion is foolish to me.
I get it all the time too tim. My reply is always......"when it's done, it's done".

Not having a, self imposed, deadline removes the stress and anxiety from projects too.

In my opinion, you're doing it the right way.

TAStevens 03-11-2015 02:21 PM

Do it "RIGHT" or don't do it AT ALL! You will regret it! Goes for most things in life! Ive been waiting on parts all winter (custom chit) but after the 10's of thousands I have spent...NOT going to "compromise" at this point!

tmmii 03-11-2015 02:32 PM

I like to get as much done early on as possible to account for parts being out of stock, fit ament issues, etc.

nofastboat 03-11-2015 02:38 PM

winter money=parts
summer money=gas and booze

Oh I hear ya, I am taking my time but also won't miss a season, I would drop in 420's and go boating if I had to lol but I mean like if it's June or July so be it... But to make early bird in April or see at day in may is a rush and the weather sucks still

frickstyle 03-11-2015 03:57 PM

I enjoy the pain and agony of projects. I prefer to take my time and stretch it out as long as possible, that way less stuff breaks, pay for dockage that you never use, and carry an insurance policy on a boat that never sees water. .

Do it Right the 1st.time ,or don't do it all, the water isn't going anywhere it will be there when your done.

Unless you live in Texas at some lakes, or in some cases Lake Erie.

Ha! Yeah, it wasn't so bad when I had another boat up here, as you have the Tiger, but missing that last season made it a little unpalatable to say the least. Only way I would do another one if it was by myself as a side project and not my main mode of water entertainment. I think a car would be next, piece of cake compared to a boat.

boat projects . . . . . :picard1: . . . . i like them so much i have made it my lifes goal to do them for other people lol

You need to throw that thing together with ducktape and zip tiies as fast as you can... it doesnt have to run great or be fast, it just has to run. That way you can give all your friends when their chit is either broke or not finished yet. Then they pay for gas, bring beer etc and you can boat on the cheap. That way you can save your money for some really sweet blower motors on FB swap shopthat somebody else built with ducktape and zipties complete with a photoshopped dyno sheet. Besides bar trollups and pool party chicks dont know the difference between blower whine and main bearings squealing either.....

~300 a year for D truck plate
~300 a year for G trailer plate
~700 a year for boat insurance
~1000 a year for the dock
~initial boat cost and it's not even in the water yet
and on and on... I'm not missing a weekend. Period. I save and buy my parts ahead of time and come October it's project time. If it took me longer than October til May, chances are it wasn't going to be right no matter how long I took to do it. I also pick only one major project a year so I don't bite off more than I can chew.

chris21hope 03-12-2015 08:57 PM

The boating season is pretty short here in Michigan, so there's no way I'm missing much of the season. That being said, things need to be done right, or else you're going to bite it later. I'd actually rather pay a builder more just to put my project on the top of his list - allowing you to do it right in a reasonable time frame. A little more cash, I suppose, but it's not like go-fast boating is financially wise anyway, right!?

caseyh 03-12-2015 10:28 PM

Yep why rush. No need too. Been building for almost 3 years no bills to pay on a boat and it will all be new.

It's like I hear an echo.... echo....

Carbon Footprint 03-13-2015 05:52 PM

I'll be two years in April on the Eliminator, but it isn't hitting the water until it's 100% done. Who wants to just slam it together enough to run or float and then spend the whole summer tinkering with everything that you didn't finish or do right the first time.
My excuse:
When I have the money I don't have the time and when I have the time I don't have the money or it's fricking freezing in the shop!!
Plus paying cash as you go for everything is hard for most of us working class stiffs.
