Standard BBC cam on the left.............. 60mm billet core on the right
|
Looks like a Bob M special. Mine had that same copper colored plating on it. Any idea why it's on there?
|
The 60mm cams went in my bud's new motors
|
Pay,
It's on there to prevent heat scaling during the heat treat process. OR |
Thanks for that info OR. I'd never heard anyone say and I've only seen it on the billet pieces. I suppose the cam is ground after the heat treating?

The cam is a 60 MM, 2304, vacuum degassed, carburized ,AQ, 8620 billet core. Weapons grade Bob |
Thanks Bob, I corrected it, I'll touch base with you first of next week,...... the point of this photo is to show how massive the core & journal size is, compared to to the OEM.

Yes, ground and finished after final heat treat. A thin copper plate prevents having to grind through a carburized layer which can be somewhat thick. The plating would not be necessary if one used a vacuum furnace to heat treat but it's somwhat more costly.
That cam is a sweet looking part and like Bob said, strong and bulletproof. OR |
I have put the 60mm in my motor but I used tool steel, Tommy from Cheif got them for me he claims they are strongest you can get and dont wear at all, seem to run good. Very expensive
