Question about sport fish yachts (specifically Vikings).

I know it's not go fast but I also know many of you dabble in the medium to smaller size yacht market. I'm not so versed and have some questions...

A very good friend is looking at picking up a 58-65 Viking, he's asked me to go with him and kinda be his right hand man on the shopping and purchasing. I explained to him this stuff isn't my forte but he still wants my limited expertise.

So, what's the does and do not a about this boat? Equipment you definately want, things to be wary of etc?

I know diesel motors get crazy hours out of them but at what point is it too much? One boat we're looking at has 1800 hours on the motors after rebuilds!!

Trying to find a nice one in so.cal but then again, a little trip through Panama Canal would kinda be a trip of a lifetime. :D

Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thank you

Tank

I do not have a whole lot of knowledge on vikings or what to look for. However, this is a great place to start looking.

Yea, I've lurked on yacht forum a bunch of times. Maybe I'll sign up and ask over there. Just thought maybe some over here would have the insight.

Hire surveyor that does bigger boats and get oil sample test. Then call me when you need insurance as I directly represent most of the major companies.. I just insured a 96 FERRETTI that started out in Malaysia on it's way to Singapore to be loaded on a ship to Florida.

Thanks Sy. Absolutely plan on oil samples and full survey.

Think I found the boat. Might need to fly to michigan.

That Hatteras is or was in Harbor Springs, put him off until July and check out Boyne Thunder....make the trip worthwhile and see some nice go fast hardware also.

700k absolutely a surveyor...or two. especially cuz it is a good friend. a detail bites him on the ass, you're not such a good friend anymore. that looks like a beautiful boat. and steering someone towards the best name in the business is rarely a bad move. but the logistics of getting that big beast to the west coast...
