Mercury Sportmaster Gearcase for 300 X
The application is our 28 Skater....The new Mercury 400R specs sound as though the Sportmaster Gearcase may NOT have been revised except for the low water pickup. As we know, the 300X and XS gearcase is subject to failure, but adding the understood 100 horsepower without additional gearcase revisions does not seem logical.
The low water pickups described within the 400R specs are definitely of interest, though perhaps someone is providing that service...Any information would be appreciated.

First, I would like to know more about the 400's. The extra weight, rigging, engine cost, Peter Hledins opinion and etc. are points to be explored. I'm sure Mercury has tested the 400's, but the fact they are newly released may require engineering revisions.
The two 300 X's are spotless w/something like 16 hours total run time. They have not been modified, hurt or damaged in any way, and they have been winterized and kept in a climate controlled building, mounted on the Skater.

Two of those 400's would be a LOT of weight on the back of a 28 Skater. It might run fairly well on glass, but I would think it would be way too stern heavy to fly level in the rough!
