Outdrive advice?

So my first time out with my new to me 29" Warlock. The boat has a IMCO upper and Bravo lower. The boat has a 540 with a super charger big horsepower and a huge cam surge. My wife for some reason threw it into drive on a high rev :( after that I had no forward or reverse had to get towed. A mechanic buddy of mine said I blew the cone clutch in the IMCO upper. Does this sound right? I was hoping to get some input.

Thanks

Sounds like a strong possibility. BUT I am not a drive expert, I never slept in a MOTEL 8 either.

abones 05-10-2015 07:52 PM

Could be a broken Clutch shaft also, I'm not an expert either, BUTI did stay at Holiday Inn Express last week!!!

iliveonanisland 05-10-2015 09:32 PM

I'd be more pissed that she blew the drive and not you.

But, I have never stayed at an hourly rate hotel wih a coin bed and jacuzzi in the bathroom.

Yes that sounds right. Absolute no no!! I have an XR with Imco Lower in the swap for sale. Fresh rebuild.

Had a similar issue several years back. Drive got dumped in fwd at high rpms. Can you shift the drive at all? Mine welded the cone clutch to the shaft and was stuck in fwd but couldn't shift.

Warlockkid 05-10-2015 11:41 PM

I can shift forward and back but nothing will engage.

Ouch, I'd buy a Fountain that comes with some skanks. But keep them away from the helm.

Better question here would be, How's the wife doing?

abones 05-17-2015 11:10 AM

Did you have a chance to disassemble for inspection yet?

And cars.

% of people want a big bad motor, but don't want to add a trans/converter/cooling system/driveshaft, rear end, suspension, and chassis to handle it.

Horsepower costs money. How much you got ?

Sorry to hear that! I was hoping it was just a snapped shaft (one of three) but not the case here. Sorry, hang in there!

Kings11 05-17-2015 04:22 PM

This much power you are basically stuck with a handful of options. Imco SCX upper, Arneson Conversion, or converting to a mercury surface drive (6 drive) to name the most mentioned.

Or you take option B. Rebuild another Bravo drive (imco, teague, max worx etc) and know that the drive is the weak link.

Majority of people take option B due to price. I can buy a lot more of used and new old stock drives and parts for bravo's compared to the previously mentioned choices for my dollar.

I have a nice BMax drive that would work for you.

Warlockkid 05-18-2015 03:56 PM

I am interested???

GTOFFSHORE 05-18-2015 09:05 PM

As a warlock owner the drives I had best luck with, with big power were bravo x diesel drives.

JRider 05-18-2015 09:25 PM

Tell us what makes the diesel drive different than any other bravo x drive....????

If you buy a used one it didn't see extended periods of 6000 rpm abuse.

JRider 05-19-2015 02:40 PM

It's not the RPMs that kill the drive, it is torque and shock load. To my knowledge the drive is not constructed any different....wondering how they are magically stronger?

the deep 05-19-2015 02:51 PM

I wish someone would prove or disprove this . I have a diesel drive on my boat and was always told they have stronger gears to handle the torque of a diesel . Why would Merc specifically label the drive as Diesel if there were no difference ?

buck35 05-19-2015 03:08 PM

I thought it was all in the gearing. If so wouldn't everyone just buy those.
Btw how is the build coming?

The smart ones did buy one....lol Maybe BUP will scope out the part numbers and let us know . Being assembled as we speak .

So I just ordered the X Mod phase four as a replacement. I have heard good things about All American Drives and George seems to be a straight shooter. I will let you know how it turns out.
