High oil temp hp 500 carb motor
Running my boat this weekend decently hard 65-73 mph for 20-30 min intervals in great South Bay LI, we would than slow down around 55 , engine water temp stayed cool whole time 130-150, oil pressure was fine but oil temp seemed to climb up over 200 +degrees, as soon as we slowed down temp would drop, going through no wake zone temp would drop dramatically, seems to me temp was high just because I was pushing hard at times, is this common with these motors? At higher speeds is the oil recirculating so fast it does not get the chance to cool down in the oil cooler/heat exchanger?... Keep in mind my motor is raw water cooled and was gone through a week ago there does not seem to be any blockage in cooler, hoses see strainer etc
Your thoughts and and experience with this subject is greatly appreciated |
200 plus isnt high oil temp by the way my friend it needs to get to 212 just to burn off condensation . id be very happy with those temps .. 230 is where i land after an extended run ..

My gauges would read 320 degrees when running hard. 260 at normal run. I hit the filter (where the sending unit is as well) with a temp gun and saw that teh gauges are way off. Temp gun showed low 230's when the gauge read 260 so it was off by more than 40 degrees. Both motors read identical.. Always thought it was weird, but glad I checked it out to ease my mind. But like Rob said, your temps aren't high...

200ish oil temp is not hot. Keep the throttles down and let it roll!

Mine run a little off... Port will run about 20-30 degree cooler than Stb. WFO the Port runs about 220ish.... Stb about 250ish....

thanks for the great replys, I guess I was a little vague with the temp being 200+, it actually reads 240 when running hard, and when I come off plane and slow down I get a beep for maybe 15 seconds,....from what everyone is saying I should not be worried about 240 when running hard oil temp and seems to be normal, I only run 1 hp 500 merc in my boat so I really have nothing to compare the oil temp with. thanks for the help

The beep when coming off plane after running hard is most likely the drop in oil pressure sometimes it will fall below the threshold for fraction of second, or the alarm sender could have a sketchy connection which is fairly common...

that makes a lot of sense, thank you Dr
