Why are boats referred to as 'she' or 'her'?

Serious question...why does every boat owner/person refer to their boats as 'she' or 'her'? Why not 'it', or 'the boat'?

Can anybody explain where/how that originated?

I emailed a guy about a boat.....In his reply, every sentence started with 'She'. "she' has been taken care of. "she" is beautiful. I hate to sell 'her'. "she" has had new gimbal rings. "she' runs great.....etc...

I'm thinking, dude, get off your boats' nuts....errr, I mean 'her' nuts. lol.

:D

According to Yarns of the Sea, Legends, Myths, and Superstitions: Although women were considered to bring bad luck at sea, mariners always use the pronoun "she" when referring to their ships. Whether its proper name is masculine, or whether it is a man o'war, a battleship, or a nuclear submarine, a ship is always referred to as "she."

This old tradition is thought to stem from the fact that in the Romance languages, the word for "ship" is always in the feminine. For this reason, Mediterranean sailors always referred to their ship as "she", and the practice was adopted over the centuries by their English-speaking counterparts.

One source suggests that a ship "was nearer and dearer to the sailor than anyone except his mother." What better reason to call his ship "she"?

Give it time, in this crazy world we live in today, someone is going to cry that it is sexist and legislation will be passed in regards to it...

I'd go with she or her, because without it being hers in some fashion I probably wouldn't have it.

buck35 06-12-2015 08:59 PM

Because for a few minutes of ecstacy or whatever, we're willing to drop thousands...:drool1:

rfgonzo 06-12-2015 09:28 PM

Because boats suck you dry, just like a Women.

seafordguy 06-12-2015 09:54 PM

SB 06-12-2015 10:17 PM

Always been the 'boat' to me/us.

It's fiberglass, wood, vinyl, and metal.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Give a boat a name, refer to it as a she,,,,,,you f*ked yourself. You gave it a personality. Last thing you ever want to do.

SB 06-12-2015 10:19 PM

By the way:

You cannot always fix a woman with $$$$.

You can with a boat.

My boat is a 'he'.
From they day I purchased him, he has never let me down. Goes when I turn they keys, loves to go fast, quite likes the rough, happy to go out with my mates when I need a break, loves a drink and never tells a sole if I take a group of girls out when the boss is not around.

I have so much in common with my boat, it MUST be a guy.

motoracerx 06-13-2015 03:48 AM

lol. I didn't know there was somewhat of a myth or folklore to it.

I guess if you were brought up around boats, grew up on/near the water, the 'she' reference was probably handed down to you through family and generations.

My main passion is motorcycles and racing, traveling the country in doing so. I have a dozen bikes worth over low 6 figure range that you guys have in a single boat, but they get no affectionate name calling. I ring their necks and throw them down the asphalt at 180 +.

Hummm, kind of common thing between the two!

When you first get 'her'
You love 'her'
'She' is the greatest thing
everyone wants what you have with 'her'
'She gets used all the time!
you take care of 'her'
you admire 'her'
you show 'her' off to all your friends
you do not care what the cost of maintaining 'her' is
You feel you have the best 'her' you can get
You just adore 'her'

Now, over the course of time of having 'her'
You no longer use 'her' as much or often
'She' tends to just sit around and get ignored
'She' tends to want more and more attention, and causes issues when not getting it
friends are tired of supporting your obsession with 'her'
'her' maintenance cost are starting to get out of control
'her' monthly upkeep is even more expensive then when she was younger or new
And the cost of getting rid of 'her' is more then just keeping her around.
But once 'she' is gone, some think its the happiest day of their life!

Hope this clarifies why Boats are 'She' or 'Her'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You hit the nail on the head on this one.

motoracerx 06-16-2015 06:46 PM

That makes more sense than the old lady and the sea folktale...or whatever it was. lol.

E Colby 06-16-2015 09:26 PM

Because it's hard to get an engine or a woman to turn over on a cold morning.

Me asking the question: Honey, why do men refer to their car's and or boats as a "she"? Wife's response: Duh, because men like to ride them!!!

tommymonza 06-17-2015 03:06 AM

She references are all about some old well designed pretty schooner or a Classic Rybovich and even that is Iffy.

Their all money Sukin material things that most women could only inspire to.

bulletbob 06-17-2015 08:34 AM

Because, just like a woman, she Focks me whenever "SHE" wants to. Not the inverse!

liquidlounge 06-17-2015 09:03 AM

My favorite has always been "stretch her sea legs". I think I may have stretched my wife's sea legs a few times while boating, but I haven't figured out how to do that to the boat yet.

Keytime 06-17-2015 09:15 AM

They're a b*tch to own.

offshore312 06-17-2015 09:54 AM

Rodney Dangerfield explained it the best...

He said I always wondered why people refer to their cars as "she"... "She" needs new tires, "she" needs an oil change, "she" needs a wax job, and so on. But then it finally occurred to me, that cars are like women because so many times on a cold morning when you really need it, neither one of them will turn over...
