how about sticking shafts thru the bottom of the hull? it is the most sensible arrangement for a constant immersion setup. lowest maintenance. longest lifespan. just try to avoid using props as a depth finder. changing them is a bit of a pain...

The notch is not a problem, on the early SH's they were all notched, we made stainless steel inserts and bolted them in and then attached Arnesons.

It sounds like to me you just have a problem with RIK's drives, and for any commercial application they are your best answer.

back in 1988-90 there were a couple UIM 2 boats running SSM-3's with diesels, Diesel Dancer being the best of them. You need a hydraulic overdrive box in-front of the drive, you now add weight and complexity to your application and that is not a standard box you can buy from ZF. Your SSM 3's I'm guessing are 1.5:1 so you need to take your Yanmar or Cummins and go through a 1:2 OD box so the drive will see the right input RPM. This has all worked fine for 30 years for racing but if you want to run the boat everyday - FIX the transom and go with Arnesons

Certainly!! ?? I'm still confused however... What bearing does does this notch have on the installation? With his application it certainly would not be a staggered setup and being about 16K wet it certainly won't go fast enough to warrant the consideration.

Then again, where did he read this misinformation in the first place?

I can only speak for myself, we ran staggered so to put your drives the mounting flanges would hang over the notch so we boxed in the notch, what he's doing I don't know. Just speaking out loud, so many talk about diesel projects but very few every happen. I hope I can afford to come back and do another project before I get too old, I really want to build another diesel boat (your drives of course), for now I can only dream!

I have had 13 years of trouble free running with Cummins power in 43 and 48 foot high speed boats we have run the Trimax drive system fixed shaft with a rudder behind. Rik at Arneson has a drive that will work the same fixed but trimable with a rudder gives you great control of the boat at any speed. And great reliability.
