Thoughts on this upgrade for a 525 EFI?

Who does the programming?

Think it really yields that power?

F-2 Speedy 06-29-2015 10:40 AM

Looks like you get a new ecm with the programming done, exchange on the throttle body to, bare heads ? I don't see any valves, springs, retainers in this package. Personally I would put a custom grind cam in them also. The 500 & 525 intake plenums will stop flowing air at around 5500 so it doesn't matter how much CFM the TB flows it wont make any more power, jmo

Keith, shoot a message to REMEDY here on OSO. He's got a great plan that works on the 525s. He's seen nice upgrades on his 33 and a few other boats he's done it too.

Is the few mph worth increased drive issues????

Will only a few mph even satify you or leave you wanting more???

You do not need a custom cam grind there are several well known engine builders that offer a "package" similar to what's listed that will work great for you.

I'd spend a little more and add over 250 hp (and lots of broken bravos!) Either way requires 91 octane.. https://whipplesuperchargers.com/ind...&product_id=56

Dave M 06-29-2015 04:45 PM

Am I missing something or do they not quote specific numbers other than "increased"? How much HP does this kit produce?

mptrimshop 06-30-2015 11:10 AM

It says as much as 75-80 hp increase. Now my understanding is that most 525's make 550-560hp.... So is that really 45-55hp increase? Is the HP measured at the prop? Isn't that how merc rates them? 7k for 45-55 hp? How much MPH can one exspect to gain from 55hp per side?

BenPerfected 06-30-2015 01:26 PM

...about +2 MPH

thirdchildhood 06-30-2015 01:40 PM

$7,000 per engine to net 2 mph and the need for 91 octane is nuts! (JMO) One of the best things about the 525 is that it likes cheap 87 octane.

VoodooRob 06-30-2015 01:49 PM

I have been weighing options and talked to Eddie Young about this kit versus Whipple. The payoff for doing this particular N/A kit, and having to run 91 as 3rd pointed out, just isn't worth it IMO. I have come to the conclusion to swing for the fence (Whipple and run 91) or leave it alone, maintain to the highest standard and enjoy availability of 87.

Several years ago I rebuilt my 525's. Before the rebuild I Dynoed both motors, both pulled 560hp plus in stock condition. The only thing I did different on the rebuild was cut the heads and did a valve job. No engine mod, no computer upgrades. Dynoed both motors and both hit 600 hp at 5400 RPM's on the rev limiter. If I flashed the computer I might have gotten a little more but why bother.

So for very little money I think 40 plus HP and fresh motors was a pretty good investment.

offshoredrillin 06-30-2015 06:00 PM

The limiting factor is the intake. I took my 500 efi with afr heads, cam, mono blade, bigger injectors and was at 640 hp and 670tq on 87 octane. Ive said it before with these intakes and set ups, you cant just change a couple components and get huge gains.

TWIN-SPINS 06-30-2015 08:04 PM

No,,,I don,t,,,,,I believe mike with the 38 top gun ,has them,,,aka, hold on tighter, name of boat

F-2 Speedy 06-30-2015 08:31 PM

A bud of mine had 3.3 whipples on stock 525 long blocks with custom tune, I think they were 750+ never dyno'd and they ran great for a couple years,( low hours ) went 103 in the shoot out couple years back, the 525 is not set up for a blower its EFI, they had piston issues when pulled apart, if you want a blower motor put the right parts in it, jmo

Feverz29 06-30-2015 09:32 PM

What about Raylar. They used to have a package that takes it to 750 I believe without a whipple.

VoodooRob 06-30-2015 09:36 PM

Eddie did tell me if I wanted to do something do the Whipple Stage 1.

HyFive578 07-01-2015 06:57 AM

IMO, this upgrade is not worth the money. If you're going to up the horsepower on a 525, whipple is the way to go. But if you go the whipple route, you need to upgrade the valve train for sure and have it done by someone who REALLY knows what they're doing. This may be heresy, but personally, I'd never do it to my 525's. Harder on the drives. And the 525's are turnkey, reliable motors (assuming you maintain them) as is and run on any gas you put in the tank . Once you add the blower, all bets are off..
