Yeah, I'd say if you're boating in a body of water that's big enough so when you're way out, you can't see land in any direction, you might qualify as an "offshore" boater...
:boat:

Bobthebuilder 07-24-2015 08:21 AM

Think I qualify. LOL

BTB

glboatdriver 07-24-2015 08:23 AM

I'm with phrgle and BlackJack58. I boat Lake Michigan and northern Lake Huron.

Wobble 07-24-2015 08:26 AM

Galveston Bay, San Jacinto River estuary, Intracoastal Waterway, Gulf of Mexico close to Galveston sometimes when the swells are just right. Spent years offshore and I am just fine being able to see land at all times now.

If I lived where there were interesting destinations offshore within an hour or two I would surely be an Offshore boater with a bigger boat. Maybe when I retire to the Caribbean

Sydwayz 07-24-2015 08:32 AM

Loaded question! I've boated all over:

Pacific Ocean
Atlantic Ocean
Chesapeake Bay
Gulf of Mexico
LOTO
Lake Havasu
Great Lakes

Take a guess where the absolute worst & biggest water I've encountered out of that list.
Hint: Even Reggie Fountain said this is the worst place he's seen for rough water (in racing context).

loto?

Nate5.0 07-24-2015 08:41 AM

Gulf Coast in Clearwater/St.Pete here.

I don't think I have ever boated on a lake but maybe once (ozarks on a pontoon)

AJ POWERPLAY 07-24-2015 08:43 AM

Great Lakes... Love the fresh clear water :-)

Yes, Lake Michigan...
...on the Chicago Poker Run a few years back to be specific.

Paraphrasing Reggie's description:
'It's like trying to drive your boat around inside of you washing machine.'

Salt and Shark Free! Now if we can just keep the fountain skanks out of the water.

amen to that

Lake Michigan can be the roughest water

It can change from dead calm to 6' in minutes

flatlanderbill 07-24-2015 10:03 AM

We boat out of the Thames river in new London , Ct. Intersection of long island sound, fishers island sound and block island sound. Run thru places like "the race" and "plum gut" regularly. Rough out there most days. Fun tho! Just took the ski out to the race last night!

An absolutely wonderful area to run around. Some of the best boating waters in the nation IMO.

Cash Bar 07-24-2015 10:24 AM

SE Fla Atlantic but travel to a lot of the cool lakes in the summer.

Payton 07-24-2015 10:57 AM

I've boated a lot of great areas, but proud to call Lake Michigan my home pond.

KevD815 07-24-2015 07:13 PM

I'm with flatlander bill and indy. Long Island, Block Island, and Fishers Island Sound for me. And yes The Race can get rough! I don't have the biggest boat in the fleet but I've been out well past Montauk into the real Atlantic. Running through some of the rollers out there are like riding a roller coaster.

Uncle Dave 07-24-2015 08:25 PM

Pacific Ocean here.

Standard run Marina Del Rey to avalon Bay Catalina island. About 45-50 miles each way.

Extended runs Marina Del rey - New port. about 75 each way

MDR to Sandiego...about 200 each way

These are my standard ocean trips.

As a guy that grew up boating in Chicago- I fear Lake Michigan far more than the Pacific Ocean.

UD

PARADOX 07-24-2015 08:27 PM

Now East and West coast of Florida. And Yesssss OFF shore. lol.. I'm not happy unless I can't see the land. About 15-20 miles out. But with all due respect to the "offshore" boaters. There is nothing worse then the Mich. It's a pond. OK. but it can get meaner then an ugly witch with a period.

HyFive578 07-24-2015 09:40 PM

North Atlantic Ocean

Speedracer29 07-24-2015 10:47 PM

I've ran Lake Michigan, Erie, Huron/Saginaw Bay, and St. Clair. I'll let you know what I think of this Long Island water tomorrow afternoon when my sea trial concludes.

W900 07-24-2015 11:20 PM

Penobscot bay, North Atlantic

ICDEDPPL 07-24-2015 11:35 PM

The less "shore" I see the better, that`s why ROTO isn`t for me, too much river boating, too much shore.
I like Lake Michigan, it`s like a box of Chocolates, you never know what you gonna get.

MILD THUNDER 07-25-2015 09:14 AM

You mean chasing down cruiser wakes on a 10,000 acre lake for photo op's, isnt offshore boating?? Jumping a wake doesn't tell us how your boat handles rough water. Aren't those also the guys who run 800HP thru Bravos and TRS, and tell the world how great they are? Or how their boat has zero stress cracks and its built like a tank? Or how their 26ft boat runs with 40 footers in rough water?

I say, bring that fuker offshore, and watch those drives snap like pretzels, and stress cracks spread like cancer. If you're running along side a pontoons at 50mph every weekend, you're not an offshore boater. :party-smiley-004:

billpor930 07-25-2015 01:41 PM

The North Atlantic around Atlantic City - Ocean City.

Xtreme Air 07-25-2015 06:31 PM

Have boated and Racing in the Atlantic off of NJ, Long Island, Lake Erie and Michigan and Now in the Gulf of Mexico in Florida.

Fast Shafts 07-25-2015 07:42 PM

With the exception of the Great Lakes, I think most "offshore boats" are overkill on lakes. Everyone one wants to be the "big fish"on the little lake.
