How the heck is the Coast Guard going to escort THAT boat within 15 miles of Cuba? Precisely which Coast Guard boat can keep up? Will that boat only do 115 with what are probably 1650's? I know its a straight bottom but c'mon 3000+ HP in what I assume is one of the lighter Apaches after rebuild. |

Cool, good publicity for the industry. Last time I went they stopped us 15 Mi out with gun boats and 50 Cal hope they have approvals before running straight in.

Great story - hope they get lots of exposure.

It was just a weekender and no record attempt. It took us 90 minutes at a low 60's MPH cruise. One of my more memorable trips with their " Coast Guard" intercepting us in their 36' center console 6 miles out. Had their machine guns out but not pointed at us. Before we left to go go back to Key West the Marina Hemingway harbormaster said to me " give me a call before you come back next time and you will not have any of these problems". Bob |
Rocky did it in May of 1979 on a rough day.
Key West to Veradero Beach, Cuba in 1 hour and 43 minutes Avg speed 55.1 MPH 38 foot Cougar and both hatches broke and blew off and were lost. Eroll Lanier throttled. |
Wishing them good luck. Have fun, be safe!
