Mercruiser 8.1 Help.

We own an Epic V23 boat that has a mercruiser 8.1 motor.

Apparently no one can help me .. Ive called multiple people in multiple locations.

I found this forum doing research.

When I hook up the computer the error codes I get are the following

Fuel LVL2 CKT H

5VDC pwr 2 L

We have been trying to get this boat to work for 3 months!!!!!!!!!! and Ive had it, i need to figure it out. Can you pleaseeee help me??!

The boat starts fine, when we take it out as soon as we go over 3300 RPMs the alarm stays on until we go back to neutral. The message on the screen says "Sensor power supply voltage is low" when I select more I get . STBD system failure 217.

Is it possible for you to guide me ? Thanks in advance

member bup can help you.he is a wizzard with merc efi and knows his chit.he will no doubt reply to this thread when he has time.

thank you !

There is a temperature sensor on the Stbd side exhaust manifold. The sender is either faulty or the exhaustanifold is corroded to the point that it is not flowing enough water and is truly overheating. Your coolant temp could be fine and still have a high exhaust manifold coolant temp. Most likely a faulty sensor.

drittle 07-28-2015 09:02 PM

Thank you Vortec, do you know where the sensor is located? or How I can find it?

Vortec Bandit 07-28-2015 09:03 PM

The fuel level code is nothing to be concerned about. Will not cause an audible alarm. The 5vdc code is showing a short in a sensor. The only sensor on that motor with a Stbd designation would be the exhaust manifold temp sensor.

Look at #16. Behind the riser where the riser bolts to the manifold.

How can you tell it's on the starboard side?

Vortec Bandit 07-28-2015 09:13 PM

Stbd system failure. That's the only sensor with a Stbd designation on that motor

The wizard is here. just kidding and thanks Mike for the compliment.

Code 217 is a fault that supplies any or all the smartcraft sensor 5 V reference signal. What that means is there is current draw on the 5 V circuit. So what I need to know is year model, engine serial # and do you have the paddle wheel, do you have DTS ?

There can be a lot more involved here including the smart transom circuit / harness. Engine serial number is important here as well.

BUP 07-28-2015 09:18 PM

Since you have a EPIC wakeboard boat do you have 2 fuel tanks or just 1..

I take it you have one fuel gauge correct ? If so the fuel "level 2 CKT hi fault" means nothing.

drittle 07-28-2015 09:54 PM

Hi Bup, Thanks for the reply.
The motor serial is # 1A380028 , not sure about the paddle wheel we are going to look in the morning , we read something about it earlier. if you could direct me where I can find it or a picture I would really appreciate it (please know that I am learning this from scratch so treat me like I am 5 ;)..) we have DTS

drittle 07-28-2015 09:55 PM

we have 1 tank

drittle 07-28-2015 09:56 PM

Thank you we will look on the morning!! I really appreciate your help

Paddle wheel mounted on the bottom of the transom it does double duty = speed readings as its paddles thru the water and has a temp sensor built in it.

I will ask the mechanic to look tomorrow. Bup I tried to send you a private message, is there a way I can contact you?

Mercruiser Smartcraft paddle wheel and has a 5 V reference signal.

You have a mechanic on this and he does not know what these codes means ? Is this what I am thinking ?

We have a mechanic and he is really smart, he just hasn't seen those errors and the engine is not common around here. since they replaced many things we are trying to figure out why we are still having issues.

I showed it to the mechanic and we have one . thank you

OK but know I have to ask to further get a handle on this as it is possible you are throwing good money at good parts that do not need to be change as your problem could a simple connection or corrosion issue in the 5 V circuit .

With a engine of a serial # 1A that is a fairly current engine like a 2009 year model. So why is a 2009 engine per your words had many parts changed ? Are you in saltwater with your wake boat or has it sunk or leaked a lot of water in the engine compartment ? How many hours on this engine ? Has it been overheated and if so how bad ? any wiring or connectors melted ?

Is your mechanic a Marine Mechanic ? If yes, is he OEM Marine trained - I have to ask because you had to show him the pic as he did not know what a paddle wheel was? Just asking cause I think you are throwing good money away here. just saying your money and time here.

We are not in salt water. We changed some parts because we saw some wear on them and we had the available . about 1500 hours. it hasnt been overheated no wiring connectors melted. my mechanic is OEM marine trained. I had to show him because we are in Mexico and he speaks Spanish, I am not familiar with the terms in either Spanish or English, I told you I am learning...

BUP 07-28-2015 11:04 PM

Ok I see now and 1500 hrs is a lot of time on this.

is this a rental boat ?

it is a 2009 or very early 2010 year model correct ?

My English is good but my Spanish is bad. Se habla espanol

This is a rental boat, we bought it back in 2008. I can teach you Spanish!!

One last question, it seems that there is a lot of wiring that is old and damaged. We would like to change all of the wiring. Is there some sort of wiring kit for this motor and if there is, any idea where I can buy it>?

Thanks
