Just got finished with our top end rebuild. Based on what my builder told/showed me...I am glad we did. Valves had bad corrosion, springs were weak, and head gaskets were all but done. In my opinion at 300 hours they should be gone thru.
It now gives me piece of mind knowing better springs are in there, better lifters, new valves, etc. also get oppurtunity to inspect piston heads, bore, etc. like someone already mentioned, once done can get another 300 hours out of them easily. What's that 7-10 years of boating. Not too bad IMO. |

That 525 or 500 efi is going to bring that sweet cammed tube header sound to the table also. With aluminum heads ,mls gasket upgrade is more likely to come into your life should the day come that heads need to come off

The improvement in looks alone over a efi mag motor almost justifies the price and maint premium

When you scan the motors on a 500EFI you get hours but not the break down of hours at which rpm.

You said you wanted something turn-key. Providing feedback from a friend of mine who believes blue motors are turn-key - along with some recent conversation I had with him about his blue motors.
I wasn't being a smarta$$.

I'm not sure how to respond to that so here's a bunny with a pancake on its head.

I wasn't being a smarta$$. Thanks for the feedback though. I was dead set against blue motors and was looking for 496 HOs, but it seems the 500s are much better than the 525s as far as issues go so I feel a little better about going with the 500. I've found a few Lightnings with 500s at around 250 hours so I think those should be turnkey for a year or two for me. At that point the general consensus is refresh the top ends which doesn't seem like a big deal. I've just heard so many horror stories about 525 header issues and then rebuilding motors at 300 hours, I don't think I want to mess with all that. The first time the wife wants to go boating and I tell her that sorry we can't because the motors are being rebuilt I'm going to be in big trouble. ;) |

You've been doing your research don't know if you are aware 500 EFI is rated 470 HP at the propshaft, 525 EFI is rated 525 at the propshaft.
