How big is too big?
 

Okay so I have kind of an unusual question. My boating group has been discussing how many members we 'need' or want to keep doing what we have been doing. And as with many other organizations I have belonged to there seems to be two sides to the argument. One says we should try and get as many members as possible and cater to as many types of people and boats as we can (except rag hangers, of course). While the other side says we can keep it smaller and more manageable while making sure we do a good job taking care of the people we have. So if you belong to a boating group or club tell me how many people you have as members, and how does it seem to work for you. I am most interested in groups that A. You have to pay some kind of dues. and B. Are not business enterprises like the Florida Powerboat Club. We are a volunteer run, not-for-profit club that hosts events all year long, but does charge a yearly membership fee, I'm most interested in clubs like that. Thanks!!

depends on the person. In a small club has all types of boats, it fits me. but a big club seems more fun more people to do things with. FPC does a great job at what they do, but its not for everyone.

It depends on what side you are on. As a club member you don't notice how big even a large club is. I'm a member of a few very large car clubs, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar and Rolls Royce owner clubs. As a member we usually form a small click within the club. Works well. For those on the boards of these clubs its almost a full time job. Id say as a member it doesn't matter how big. If I was on the board, Id fear a large club because it becomes like a job.

I am a member of leopa (lake erie offshore performance association) and there is 157 members this year. There is a fee and must be a member to do the runs. Not every one gos to all the outings and runs but always a good turn out. With good people the more the merrier but dont know about the other side .

Its a club you have regular meeting and dues. To join, someone first has to sponsor you, you meet with the board before the meeting, Then during clubs business/new members part of the meeting to 2 or 3 meetings the guys name is read and he stands up so the members get an idea who he is, then on the 3rd meeting he is asked to leave the room and members vote yay or nay. Standard club stuff, then if he gets in he has to buy a round

My boat club on the delaware is full of a holes but it affords us a collective paying dues so it pays for riverfront property with a ramp yay.

and pay for the strippers (aka fountain skanks)....

I would join a club to spend time with fellow powerboaters who are passionate about the same sport as myself. They should have to own an actual offshore go fast style boat or be crew member to another captains boat. Sorry not interested in hanging out with NON offshore go fast powerboaters, We do that each time filling up at the gas station. :lolhit:

Nothing wrong with being friends with people that own a bayliner. I will hang out with them other times. But when it comes to offshore speed boating I feel it should be a more exclusive group.

I have friends that race Lamborghini and Ferrari but I don't bring a kia optima to the race track club.....

Less quality members gets my vote
