Might be pretty pricey but check out what Merc is doing with the LS. Ought to be a screamer.

This is somewhat old news. Merc will be coming out with a NA version of the twin turbo dohc motors. Gonna be between 800-900 hp, 7k redline. They just are trying to wait for the right time and figure out how to price it for the market. This is insider info I've been told from a very reputable source

phragle 01-30-2016 10:02 PM

On the LS front merc actually came out with that head a couple years ago. IMO..its worthless. everybody else has a solid marinized LS platform running up to around 600 hp. Hell you can buy a marinized supercharged LS straight from GM powertrain. In Merc's cute LS head setup its too much too late. You dont need those high dollar fancy schmancy heads to get good power from the LS platform, especially when for considerably less money you can already get marinized LS power in bravo eating range.

Here's 4 choices for LS marine power and thats not even counting Crusader...

Yeah just thought they were neat. Also not everyone wants to run a boosted engine. I figured if the price wasn't out of line a big inch ls with those heads would be a good combo.

You do realize your talking about Mercury right?? price, out of line, merc...lol, rofl, spit beer at screen, , chuckle, snort, blow out the hernia repair, pass a stone.... Merc, price out of line, surely you jest!!! And dont call me shirley...

I will tell you this much, who ever talked his boss at merc into letting him develop that, he gets the salesmen of the year award..

I do hope you realize this a satirical comment against merc, not you.....

hogie roll 01-31-2016 02:36 AM

Interesting, but stupid. Why not just Marinize a ford motor, or a Toyota, or a Nissan, or a merc, or a bmw, or a Porsche, or a Hyundai? There are literally a half dozen plus already designed large displacement V8s. Maybe they pulled an LT5 head print and figured out that they wouldn't have to change much.

Keith Atlanta 01-31-2016 07:22 AM

For the heads or the whole engine?

wannabe 01-31-2016 09:49 AM

If you look at the graph the intake side of the stock LS there is very little improvement. The stock LS intake ports are so efficient and contribute SWIRL to the intake charge. You can make 2000 HP on a LS with turbos and the LSX block easily.

I still dont understand why there are not tons of Turn Key LS motor packages. I see Ilmore and indmar versions but there are no listed prices and they are usually setup for ski boats. Even merc has Re-Created a SBC.. Forget the SBC.. We want LS tech.

Simple..if the market wanted it, it would be there. Prices are reasonable on indmar and gm stuff, warrantys are there, now go to a boat show and tell me how man entry level offshore boats you see vs wakeboard and bowrider boats........

Build it an they will......... crickets...

Spoke to the guys at Indmar a couple times and they offer a hell of a package for not a lot of money. You can get the supercharged 575 LS in the high teens with exhaust and warranty. When i talked to them they really are pushing the Raptor Ford motor though, in the grand scheme of things your not likely to do any wrenching on it so it really would not matter what the base is. My thought is if i was looking for a good strong replacement style engine for a sport boat that will spend it life in "as designed" form this is a great option. These are not for the guy that has to tinker with everything and find hidden HP (like most of us lol) Fantastic pair of engines if you were building a 30 ish foot boat.

All of Ilmor's LS engines up to 570 hp are available with a number of different stern drives:

Volvo Penta has been producing LS-based power up to 430 hp for 4-5 years now:

all Chris' batboat have the 570's in them now. That is one bad ass engine. Pushing 90mph with a Bravo3 and not the biggest props we have. Pulls like a freight train and has been a pretty turn key engine.

f_inscreenname 02-01-2016 12:07 PM

30 grand for a motor....
I don't have 30 grand in the restore of my race boat and it has 2 motors. Just saying.

That looks like the same type of heads Mercury built for the Z98(?) C4 Corvette.
I understand the Chevy engineers were not happy GM went to Mercury
to build that engine. I believe that is why GM kept the push rods for the C5/6 LS
and C7 LT engines.

I saw the Mercury 4 valve engine in 2014 at SEMA. I spoke to one of the engineers who designed the heads. The guy really knew his stuff.
