Blow out tube:
The first time I took the boat to the water I was rushing to get a quick test to make sure the transmissions worked, steering, ect. and to make sure the boat would float.. before it was going to be tied up getting a special coating on the whole boat ( I will post more on this tonight). I knew I would need blow out tubes for the props but did not have time to make them so when we tried to get on plane we could not get any boost so it had no power. While the coating was being put on the boat I made the blow out tubes. Was not sure what size I would need so I went big, there 4" dia piece of stainless elbow with a collar welded to it for the rubber hose to clamp to then some gussets and flanges welded to the bottom to bolt down on the arneson. They ended up being too big and once it broke loose the prop would not get enough bite to get on plane so now I have just a 2" dia piece of rubber till we get more testing done. One thing we learned very early on was to have soft tips for the blow out tubes, use about 3" of silicone hose at the end~ don't carry the stainless tube all the way to the propeller. Any debris or worse, rope, that gets picked up by the prop will jam between the prop and the steel tube causing all sorts of problems for you. Yes, we learned this the hard way.... Good luck! |

My view right now, it's 28 degrees out and snowing but I wanted to test a few modifications I made to the transmissions.

Motors love the cold temps. :)

After you get it dialed in I would like to hear about the acceleration and top end speed. I know its designed for running the long distance of the Ocean and wouldnt expect it to be a burner. What is the retail value of the motors.

Found this thread yesterday, and all I have to say is WOW. Love the attention to detail, It took me a few pages to realize you where the guy I met on the A&B dock in Key West. We talked about my fathers 477 Nor-tech with the Mercury/VW TDI Diesels. He ended up changing the props from 30s to 28s and it gets right up on plane now, he said they are going to order 29s thinking they will be the right prop for the boat. My dad really enjoyed your Bermuda story with TDI motors. (Gatorade HAHA) We double checked the oil level the next morning. Good luck with everything and look forward to the future of this amazing Skater build. |
