A 33-year-old Lantana-area man will need reconstruction surgeries to his skull, mouth, nose and cheeks after his face was struck by his boat’s propeller last weekend.

A large wave created by a passing boat knocked Daniel Pena overboard and beneath his own boat south of the Ocean Avenue bridge, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said. His nephews with whom he was spending the afternoon on the Intracoastal Waterway immediately jumped into the water and struggled to pull Pena back into the boat, FWC said in a report made public Thursday.

Pena lost all of his teeth and part of his tongue, said Jaquelin P. Garza, his sister-in-law. He remains in intensive care at Delray Medical Center and will be moved to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for at least 20 rounds of surgery.

“It’s going to be a long process to recovery,” Garza said.

Pena’s family has created a GoFundMe webpage to help cover his mounting medical costs. He is married with two young children and is employed as an air-conditioning repairman.
g to the GoFundMe page. Because of the extent of his injuries, Pena has not been able to speak, but has been able to communicate by writing with his left hand, the page said.

Pena had gone out for the day on the water with his nephews, Daniel and David Garza of West Palm Beach, ages 29 and 26, respectively and their friend Joseph Villareal, 25, of Wellington, to celebrate David’s birthday. His boat, an 18-foot 2015 Mako CC Flats boat, was traveling south on the Intracoastal and heading back to the dock at about 5 p.m. when he tried to cross the wake from an oncoming vessel, according to the FWC report.

As Pena’s nephews struggled to save him, Daniel sustained a small cut to the top of his head, the FWC report

“My nephews were very brave to get into the water and save him,” Jaquelin Garza said. “But to pull (him) back into the boat that is looping around without stopping was really hard. They were struggling, but finally they did it.”

Pena was flown to Delray Medical Center by a Trauma Hawk helicopter, FWC said.

Pena has long been an avid fisherman who would often went out with friends on their boats, said Jaquelin Garza, a marketing specialist at The Palm Beach Post. Last year, Pena decided to buy his own boat.

“He was very cautious,” Garza said. “He took a course on the safety issues. He knows the speed limits from bridge to bridge. The fact that other, bigger boats they come by so fast, that’s the danger that is there in the Intracoastal.”

The FWC said in its report that it is investigating whether alcohol played a role in the incident. It was not known if the operator of the other boat was aware of what happened to Pena’s vessel.

Saw it happen to a girl here during an island party. Boat was stuck, she (along with others) were pushing, and the owner had the motor going at throttle trying to get unstuck, her arm slipped and that was that.

Really ugly scene and the girl did not make it.

I bet a law suit will be next. Does seem like a tether is a good idea on any boat.

Curious I thought everybody had health insurance now why does he need a go fund me page?

Yes I am more than a little sarcastic with that last comment.
