Breakwater Chicago

This looks pretty awesome. Hope they can pull it off. I like how the rendering shows several go-fasts :party-smiley-004:

Awesome!

They have been talking about this for over two years now, saw it on FB and been following the FB page since back in early 2014. The last I heard they had no funding and the project was on life support. I hope it does happen, would be sick but in the mean time the Play Pen will have to do.

Wasted Income 03-15-2016 03:57 PM

Yea, in the video they say that they've been working on the project for 2 years, but they certainly don't give any indications that they're on life support....but sadly, that's how many of these ideas end up before they finally kick the bucket.

As an aside, I've never been to the Playpen...would like to check it out sometime.

I can understand a floating bar/nightclub....but a swimming pool? I mean its the playpen! jump off the boat and go swimming...why would i boat out to a floating island to go swimming?

sommerfliesby 03-16-2016 06:37 AM

I cannot fathom the political red tape it would take to make this a reality. This IS Chicago we are talking about...

Hell...before it's over, they'd probably have to incorporate some Section 8 housing into the plan to make it legal...

LOL! yep and there would also be an article in the local papers on how much money has been spent greasing peoples palms to get tax breaks and how they are now avoiding tax's for set amount of years and the city(the tax payers) has to PAY them to keep it floating! :)

I went on a poker run to the Bahamas a few years ago. Resort pool was beachfront and had a swim up bar. The bathrooms were far away from the pool 600-700 ft. After my 2nd trip to take a leak I realized that despite all the drinking (hours worth), very few people were leaving the pool. I didn't get back in the water......:D

After you drink enough alcohol, it's mostly water anyway, haha.

Wally 03-16-2016 09:00 AM

If this thing ends up anchored in the Playpen (Chicago's version of party cove for the LOTO folks) i still cant see people wanting to be in the pool.....it will definitely be an attraction people will want to check out for the first month or two...and then people will end up going right back to rafting off each other and partying together.....who's gonna pay $5/beer when you have all the drinks you want on board your own boat! Unless this place has killer food to keep people coming back (which i think would be AWESOME to have a place on the water for food) i still don't see this lasting too long.....and knowing how Chicago operates.....they will charge you $20/hr or more to dock at this joint!!

Wally 03-16-2016 09:02 AM

If anyone local remembers the Baja beach club downtown just down the channel from Navy Pier...they were charging that ($20/hr) per boat and that was some 15-20yrs ago! Man I'm old!!! :D

$20/hr? LMAO. When Dick's Last Resort was still over in Ogden Slip, it was $40 just to tie a rope...minimum. The new Riverwalk is $1/per foot per hour. My boat actually shinks when I get there...

Wally 03-16-2016 09:11 AM

Yea we got lucky docking at DLR when they first opened....they did tell us it would be be $30/hr/boat......but we tipped the dock kids $20each (2 kids) to keep an eye on the rigs (4 boats at the time) and we stayed there and ate for about an hour and half...when it came time to leave the kids were like "have a great day!" and just shoved us off :D

LMAO. more like section 8 boats. Everyone should be entitled to a boat, right?

$30 per hour is a bargain, it's $50 per hour to dock at the City Winery on the Chicago river on weekends. A recent city budget meeting one of theidiot tax loving alderman was proposing a lock fee heading both in and out of the lake from the river.

We have lots of those in Peoria. They usually come out on Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day.

It didn't get passed or even considered but I am sure at some point it will come back into play. Mayor Rahm loves his taxes.....

Naperville is nice, very upscale, no crime, great dining, nightlife and shopping options, some of the best schools in the country if you have kids. Property taxes in Naperville are relatively low compared to most of the Chicagoland area, lost of corporate headquarters here, lots of retail and a well run city government keeps the taxes low. Moving out of state would be the best option, things are going to go from bad to worse in IL.

Good ole Bah-Jah beach club......blast from the distant past that's for sure!

I'm sure ~if~ the floating island ever does happen, it'll be overpriced, over served, and over commercialized like only Chicago can do to a good idea.
