Just got in from a town meeting

I attended the Naples, Maine town meeting tonight. The main topic of the evening was "Excessive boat noise"

I have been in the local paper all summer because some folks hate my loud boat:D

I sat through this meeting and bit my tongue, while these goons with nothing else to complain about, ragged on and on about how the "Jerk in the 38 Cigarette" ruined thier summer

I sat in the back row while they lambasted me and my boat. As the meeting was coming to a close, I got up and introduced myself to the guy that called me the "jerk"

I said hello, I`m Kurt. I`m the "jerk" in the Cigarette:D He turned several shaded of red/purple and started shaking and ran out of the room:D I had followed him out in the hall and he refused to talk to me and said "your the enemy" and was sweating profusely:D I then cornered him and insisted that he shake my hand and talk:D after a fair amount of persistence, I was able to converse with him. After talking to the guy who has caused me so much grief all season ( court date for excessive noise next week) I felt sorry for him that he has so little going on in his life that all he has to dwell on is a noisy boat every now and then:(

I am glad I attened the meeting, several of his followers had commented that It took a lot of guts to show up at this meeting alone and "take the heat"

I do feel better as most of the folks complaining about loud boats are very old and they will be dead soon;)

Kurt:cool:

Maybe you could just ask them to turn down the volume on their hearing aids:D :D .......or turn up the volume on their TV's to watch Matlock and Murder She Wrote:D :D

You did the right thing. I think a good idea would be to take a few of them on a ride and show them how much fun it is. Of course it would be fun to scare the poop out of them by taking flight in some rough seas but that wouldn't accomplish anything except a big :D on your face. Take them for a nice mellow ride and they might like it and see our side of the equation.

Nice way to handle a tense situation , Kurt.

You may win them all over yet !

Hey! I'm old, but I like loud noise;
and big print!

:D

Biggus, done like a true gentleman! VERY good way to handle it!
I had a similar problem a few yrs back at the Yacht Club. Many of the old timers were disgusted to have a boat like mine there. I would strike up conversations with them over time & finally took several for a ride. They had a blast!

DJD 09-24-2002 08:09 AM

p.s. I cant believe they had to hold a meeting about the sound of your boat:confused:
When are these people going to get on with their lives & stop worrying about everyone else????

enticer 09-24-2002 08:13 AM

Yes you found out who the enemy was.....the older generation. As we all get older we tend to forget when we and they were younger and ran cars or what have you with out mufflers.......long before the laws came into effect on noise and pollution of the streets
Yes...I commend you on going to the meeting ...I myself would have gone. They have nothing better to do.....except have meetings and play cards....:)
They probably had baseball cards or balloons on their bicycle spokes

You must live in a very small town. Did you say it's called Mayberry?

BURNSMAZZ 09-24-2002 11:06 AM

Biggus was the the guy an old geezer?I have to agree with you, some people have a lot of time on their hands, and really need to worry about their own ****.

McGary911 09-24-2002 12:34 PM

............dead soon. :D :D :D LOL

Maybe you could bribe them with a few cases of Gold Bond Powder?

Biggus 09-24-2002 12:34 PM

Thanks for the support folks

Yes, it was a room full of angry old timers

I had a dream last night, it was like a frankenstien movie with an angry horde of town people marching down my road with lit torches in the air, to rid the lake of "the monster"

:D :D :D

Kurt.

Next year in South Haven will be tough. They are working on a noise ordinance that is so strick that if you fart load after 11:00 PM you will get a citation. I may have to move for a number of reasons but I think I will just wait for them to throw me out.:D

cuda 09-24-2002 02:55 PM

Kind of reminds me of working in condo's down here in Florida. The old people have nothing better to do than to mind everyone else's business.

You did the right thing though, kill them with kindness. I try to do the same thing, but sometimes I hit my **** taking threshold and blow up. It usually doesn't do any good.

Thats some funny chit........:D:D:D. Way to go !!!

mopower 09-24-2002 03:18 PM

They may be dead soon , but watch out for their legacy...Noise restriction laws:mad:. wonder if they ever complain about Harleys. Most people live closer to the road than boats passing by:rolleyes:. I've got a ticket from good ole Lake Winnipesaukee in NH . Hey , where I come from they don't bother you yet(unless someone complains) even though there are laws on the books requiring muffled exhausts and limits. Good luck next week;)

I hafta' ask ENTICER at what age does the older generation start? 50, 55, 60, 65,70?????? I think we have some "old guys" here also. I don't think it is necessarily a generational thing. More of what people were exposed to as they grew up..... and
maybe this noise thing is a big problem because of over developement of water front areas. I know of no noise limit laws or enforcement of laws in Oklahoma probably because developement is somewhat limited (on the lakes). Most houses are over 100-150 feet from the waters edge and not crammed together. most lots are 1/2 to 3/4 acres or more and LOTS OF TREES to absorb noise. Fewer people, fewer complaints. Ya' just cannot make everybody happy, so make someone else (besides yourself) happy. Be considerate of others first & MAYBE they will be more tolerant, ... stop & talk to them and offer then a ride and maybe they will understand more. If not, then ignore them!! They want piece and quiet, but we want our piece.... in quiet!! :) No offense to anyone here but population density can be a big problem..... especially at vacation homes.

mopower 09-24-2002 06:08 PM

Hey Blown ,
Some of us here may be older....but we refuse to grow up:D

Smitty 09-24-2002 06:50 PM

Just offer to take the whole town out for a ride!! Once you get a few "over the fence" you will help balance the scales.

Most of those people have never been in/on or around a boat like that. You are right, they all view it as a monster!!!

Go for it--can't hurt right!!!

cartman 09-24-2002 08:50 PM

Congrats, mabey a few will kick off during the winter.:D :D :D

masi242 09-24-2002 08:56 PM

Biggus, remember hold your friends close, but hold your enimes closer.:D

My birthday is this weekend and I am starting to feel like an old guy at 46 :-) and have dry stacks that are pretty loud. The guy with arguably the coolest boat in the world, Howard Arneson, is in his eighties I think.

Tribute to Howard Arneson website

Maye we can all grow up to be like him. I met him a few times and he is a wonderful man.

Tom
