Fresh dyno sheet on the first engine of a pair of mild 9 to 1 540's going into a new 380 PQ with XZ drives. How fast do you think its going to run? The dyno #'s are with the engine fully accessorized and ready to drop in the boat.

timucin 09-24-2002 04:44 PM

what is the weight of your boat?

Raypanic 09-24-2002 04:45 PM

83 my guess

bobby daniels 09-24-2002 05:09 PM

WHAT ARE THE CAM SPECS. "THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT"
HOW HEAVY IS THE BOAT
HOW WAS THE CAM PUT IN (WHAT DEGREE?)
BOTTOM END POWER IS JUST NOT THERE FOR TORQUE OR H.P.
NOT BEING CRITICAL ,REALLY JUST WOULD LIKE TO HELP IF POSSIBLE :) :D

rpm 09-24-2002 09:10 PM

Ray, I think you are very close, I'm looking for 85. Engine #2 will be on the dyno Friday, tailpipes are being made for the CMI split tubes as we speak. If all goes well I'll have your answer next weekend or shortly thereafter.

Bobby, The boat weighs 9000 lbs. Please explain what you mean by "bottom end is just not there for torque or hp"? A/F ratios are a little strong, but a fat motor is a HAPPY motor and I'm pretty sure that 600+ ft/lbs of torque in the cruising range (35-3800 rpm's) will turn 32" Labbed Bravos just fine. Torque and HP match @ 5300, that should help keep drives together as well.

Its a .580/580 lift cam with 228/234 duration on a 112* centerline installed straight up in a 9 to 1 hydraulic roller engine.

It was never designed or intended to be a race engine, but an everyday turn the key reliable, dockable setup that a lady could drive, yet perform respectively when needed. We expect it to idle at 850/900 in neutral and 750/800 in gear. I'd be interested in your advice on how to make this setup work better. WOT is 55 gal/hr. Thanks

cobra marty 09-24-2002 09:21 PM

640tq and 640hp- not too bad. hpand tq will by defination = at 5250 rpm. Like you said a little rich, lean it out .5 and improve your power. 55GPH ouch!. Is that -2 on the boost or a 2inch vacuum? maybe needs more carb.

rpm 09-24-2002 09:33 PM

Marty, neither boost or vac were hooked up, not sure why the default shows -.2. It has plenty of carb, its a 1050 dominator and well within CFM parameters. I'm actuall pretty happy with 55 gph to make 640 HP - at 3800 its only using 17 gph ( no secondaries yet) and makes more torque than a 500 EFI at WOT and using way less fuel. Once the engines are in the boat, we'll fine tune the carbs, but I think we are within a jet size or two. The extra 10 HP that we leave on the table doens't mean didley to us at WOT, it wouldn't even be 1 mph and no sense putting it on the edge for a family cruiser. Thanks

Great torque curve.

KAAMA 09-24-2002 10:00 PM

RPM/Rod,

I agree with Tinkerboater. I think you did an excellent job with that engine in my opinion! Especially with such a small cam and the for a 540" engine. You might try a 950cfm Holley vs the 1050 and see what you get like idle quality, GPH, as well as TQ/HP numbers. Very impressive numbers so far I think! Thanks for sharing.

Can't get over the size of that cam for the numbers you've gotten! Very good! :) What brand is the cam?

H2Xmark 09-24-2002 10:00 PM

sounds like a nice setup there, I would say when dialed in 86-87 mph

KAAMA 09-24-2002 10:08 PM

Rod/RPM,

BTW, what kind of heads and port work if any? Who's the cam manufacturer?

454hoho 09-24-2002 10:15 PM

Kaama

I was impressed to would like to know cam etc. if he drops to a 850 carb. idle might improve but what happens to Hp & tq.
Bart

454hoho 09-24-2002 10:18 PM

sorry

meant 950 carb.

IDRPSTF 09-24-2002 10:20 PM

Rod,
What kind of muffler bearings did you install?

Did you use detergent oil?

Would you agree 1.21 Jiggawatts is right for the Flux Capacitor

and most inportant: What is the differance between "Seasoned" and "Non-Seasoned" Ice?????

rpm 09-24-2002 10:39 PM

Hi Fred, yes its a 25' Talon and had the very first HP 500 ever built. It was a former Mercruiser blackhawk test boat. Last time it was in the water it ran 93 on gps with a very tired engine. I'm pretty sure Gary will sell it, but I don't know at what price. If you'd like I can ask him.

Mark, the 1050 purrs like a kitten. We did some emulsifier tube mods and that along with our CRANE custom grind smooth valve ramping and some very agressive initial timing its pretty docile at idle. We did do some pretty extensive carb work before we were happy. We didn't try a 950 because we believe our 509/ 600 HP low lift program seems to max it out. The heads are Merlins with what we call stage IV porting - in the 385 range at .600 lift and are done locally by Todd Goodwin of Goodwin Competition. Todd and I have been working together for 10 years and he does 100% of my headwork and valvetrain design. We think we could make better numbers with the old style Darts or Merlins with smaller runners. These are the new ones with 320 CC runners and 2.300 intakes.

Bart, an 850 would be no where near enough carb at the lowe rpm range we like to run stuff...ie 52-5400 max.

KAAMA 09-24-2002 10:42 PM

Bart/454hoho,

He might lose something like 15-20hp/torque or so going from a 1050 to a 950, but he will gain better idle quality, drivability and burn less fuel at the same rpm. When he dyno's the 2nd engine it would be interesting to see that comparison if he does it.

KAAMA 09-24-2002 10:52 PM

Rod,

What's your number please?

rpm 09-24-2002 10:58 PM

Matt, we used the same muffler bearings that NASA uses so that we can use water for lubrications instead of oil, you got me on the jig a watt thing, thats way beyond my ability to be confused and everyone here in the midwest knows that seasoned ice has been driven on and is full of $hit. FYI... I may be in Havasu for the Poker Run.

ROD I THOUGHT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR SOME HELP TO GET MORE POWER,,, AS FOR A 540 THATS MADE TO BUGGIE THOSE NUMBERS DID NOT SHOW IT :)
BUT I AGREE WITH KAMMA WITH THAT CAM ITS O .K.
AND I AGREE WITH COBRA AT 5250 ,,,,H.P. HAS TO = TQ. PERIOD :D SO THATS NOT BY DESIGN .
IT WILL BE GREAT FOR A RIDE AROUND BOAT AND YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THE HEAD SWAP (OLD MERLINS )WILL HELP ,
SORRY I DID NOT UNDERSTAND POST :) :)

rpm 09-25-2002 12:45 PM

Bobby, no problem comments and thoughts are always welcomed and appreciated.
