Little boats are a blast!

I spent the afternoon in my little boat. It`s a 1986 Sea Ray Pachanga with the orig 260 Mercruiser. I have not had it long and was playing around with my GPS and some props I had.

With the 21 cleaver that came on it she ran 54.5 on GPS at 4600. I then installed a 21 Lazer. It now ran 58.0. Then I put a timing light on it and it was at 4* at idle. Advanced the timing to 8* and picked up .4 mph and 100 rpm`s. I then bumped it up to 10* and picked up .6 mph. Bumped it up to 12* and it was now running 59.5 at 4900!

Now that I was out of the 4200-4600 range set by Merc, I installed a 13.25x23 Vector and she ran 61.6mph at 4800 rpm:D :D :D

I am so impressed with this little boat, it is a blast to drive and handles fantastic and is very quiet, (weird looking stock mufflers that look like little shop vacs) I am going to install an Alpha SS tomorrow and it will be very interesting to see how fast I can get this old boat with an orig 260 small block going:eek:

If they go this well with an old small block, how do they run with a decent big block?

traviss 09-25-2002 07:01 PM

Let me know if your interested in selling that SS drive... :)

Travis

Biggus 09-25-2002 07:08 PM

Travis, it belongs to a buddy, he has a pair of them and 1987 320EFI`s on an old 24 Donzi Spitfire. He blew a motor and pulled everything out to re rig for next year. He is known for not finishing things, so I`ll keep you in mind;)

I have seen them on ebay before.

Kurt.

Sweet :D :D :D

Biggus 09-25-2002 07:31 PM

Hey Boy!!!...you heading up this weekend? Fryburg fair starts Sunday:D I`m gonna eat my way from entrance to exit:D :D

glassdave 09-25-2002 07:37 PM

ya know . . i think if you open up the exhaust you might pick up a few mph's :D . . . . an prolly another exsesive noise ticket huh. . . .

Biggus 09-25-2002 07:42 PM

Glassdave, funny you replied. I bought the Pachanga from Paul who stays at Whiteys camp down the river from me. Didn`t you stay there last winter?:

cuda 09-25-2002 07:42 PM

What size Pachanga is it? Speaking of little boats, I am still in the process of redoing the interior of my 20 foot Formula. Sometimes it is nice just to hook up the smaller boat and go for a spin. Easier to clean up, less fuel, and easier to launch and retrieve. The main reason I want to get mine back on the water is to pull it to farther destinations.

glassdave 09-25-2002 07:57 PM

yea . .i was hope'n to get out there this summer but these damn people out here keep wreck'n their boats  havent had much time off. although it did alow me to buy a bigger boat :D . . we might stay up there again this new years or somthin . . lookin forward to bring'n my boat to those waters one of these summers. .

Biggus 09-25-2002 07:58 PM

It`s a 22' Pachanga. I can`t believe a 22' boat with a cabin up front can go 61.6 GPS with a stock old small block. and I am sure there is more to be had with the SS drive:cool:

HyperBaja 09-25-2002 08:01 PM

the big block will have much more weight, keep the engine in there now.

if you ever come to columbus, i would love for a few extra mph.....

powerqrudy 09-25-2002 08:11 PM

BIGGUS, what were those props you are running?? 14x21 or 13.75 x21 ??? any idea ??? let me know thanks.... RUDY

cartman 09-25-2002 08:13 PM

Biggus, I've seen up to 5mph on a 18' Donzi bolting on a Alpha SS you will probably reprop again cause the SS is 2" shorter let me the result's! Spark.

Audiofn 09-25-2002 08:36 PM

Damn I am going to miss the fair!!!! Oh well I guess I could forget about that as I am flying across the water in Kennies Tiger :D:D Have fun guys, wish I could be there. Now Kurt what about the Cruiser do not forget about the cruiser. I hope you have the heat going in that scow :D:D

Jon

cartman 09-25-2002 08:49 PM

Damn I just checked out the fair dates 29th to 6th and once again I'm going to miss woodsman day monday oh well

Ted G 09-25-2002 09:42 PM

Hey Spark, is that a Cougar???

Biggus 09-26-2002 05:56 AM

Audio, when I first bought the Pachanga, I was going to resell it to make a few $$. When I put it in the water, I fell in love with it:D .... Laura said something has to go, and put the money back in the bank. So the Carver is on ebay:( ... I cleaned it up real nice and the response has been great. It`s priced to sell.

Anyone looking for a 26' Carver dual station cruiser for short $$?

Caincando1 09-26-2002 07:10 AM

Wow thats a lot of boat for that motor to run that kind of speed. I get the same results from my 19ft Baja turning a 23 lazer II at 4800 with a 260/350.

Is it safe to run your timing that high? I run mine at 8. Maybe I should bump mine up to 12 also.

Brian

Audiofn 09-26-2002 07:57 AM

Kurto that is what I figured. The dock would have had to grow as well :D:D Plus don't forget you are going to need a trailer soon!!! If you need mine to at least get ya home and up on stands you can use that. I am putting new bunks and rollers on it as soon as I get home from Cali.

Cignificant 09-26-2002 09:29 AM

Kurt, there are folks around here that have put blown BBs in 22's and see the 90s. Boat drives rock steady at that speed. But with an Alpha I'd stick with the small blocks. I' know of a strong 406 bolted up to a SS for eight years now and it's still running great.

Advantage_Rob 09-26-2002 09:58 AM

Biggus,
My uncle worked and boated out in Pontiac Mi for years on Cass lake, There was a guy out there with a blown big block with 900hp, if memory serves me correctly, 94mph was the #. I remember thinking that's alot for that 22' boat, but he said it was built very tough, and it remained stable at high speeds. I dont think I would get on it though.

Insptech,

That's Sparky's Viscious Cat, a 32'
My friend Jason bought the boat from him this spring. Twin promax 300's, gaffrig monster guages, a cabin in it, a bad assss mitcher T paint job, it's a very sweet boat, I was at his shop tuesday night, and he had the mold back out, and he said he's getting ready to build another one. I like the boat, and Jason loves it and said he will never buy anything other than a cat again. My cat is a 26', and the ride on mine isn'y good till about 80 mph when it packs enough air, the Viscious cat amazes me in the fat that you can cruise along at 40 or 50mph, and it's really smooth and comfortable. Sparky had it up over 110, but I'll let him answer the exact mph #, He raced it in p class stripped down and turned avarage lap times of over 100. When Jason bought it, sparky took off the race hatch, and added a back seat and cabin to it, and It still runs upper 90's, and that's after he dinged his props up and had them sent in for repair, which dropped the rpm's. I think he's gonna buy a brand new set, because he's been working with those to try to get his rpm back and it's just not working out the way he wants. It sure a fun boat though.

Speaking of small boats and Viscious cat's, I love cat's and it's no secret, Sparky is also in the process of tooling up an 18' cat, it's the perfect play boat for me. I could hang it off of my jet ski davit, and go for an after work blast every day. Sparky hurry up and get that mold done, and build one, I want to go for a ride on it, and find me a buyer for my 32. I know of a 18 that's coming out, and I want one!

;)

pachangalpina 09-26-2002 10:13 AM

Biggus,
I noticed additional RPM by getting rid of the 5gal pail muffs. I bought some fiberglass 90's and put them in-line. The boat was a little louder but not much because the exhaust exits low and is muffled under the platform. If you want the fiberglass 90's let me know because I am now using headers.

22' Pachanga as wel

Biggus,
I have a 1986 22 Pachanga as well. It started off with a stock Merc 260 and then had a Paxton and waster injection installed. Running 5 lbs of boost the boat ran 65-66 before the motor developed a rod knock. I was swinging a 25" Mirage.
Over the winter I built a 454 .060 over with stock exhaust and no mufflers (2 90 degree bends and out the corners). I put in an Ultradyne Cam that is supposed to be good for 375 hp. Peanut port heads and a stock low rise intake with an Alpha drive. Ran on the Potomac yesterday flat water, 73 degrees and the 25 mirage (needs to be undinged) and I was running 67mph on the speedo @ 4600-4700 RPM. I need to readjust all my valves and get the prop reworked to get the motor to spin 4900-5000. I hope to see 70 on gps but I might be smokin it!!
Keep us updated on the SS...I noticed yesterday when I pulled the boat out that the trim at fat cruise wasn't all that far out so I believe the x dimension is pretty good already but I'm sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for your results....Might need to sell the BB and rebuild the SB!!
Ken

Donzi Corleone 09-26-2002 09:09 PM

My 22ZX will do 66mph with a 24p 4 blade bravo 1...Open exhaust..It runs all day on $50.00...See it in the classifieds...Yes,they do go fast with out a big hit to the wallet, but I got to get this cat thing outa my system...:D

Advantage_Rob 09-27-2002 08:59 AM

speed2lead,

Good call on wanting a cat, but the bad part is, it wont get out of your system.

Biggus 10-02-2002 06:08 PM

It was another perfect day up here in Maine, the weather is cooling down a little and I spent the afternoon ripping up the lake in the Pachanga. As I said before, I am incredibly impressed with how well this hull goes:eek: :D

Today was a slight chop, very slight, and I cleaned the fuzz off the flame arrestor and made some GPS runs.

Got 64.0 on gps at 4950rpm with a 23 Vengence prop.

What do you guys think of that with a bone stock 350 Mag in a 22' boat!

It picks up a full mph on gps with the hatch open about 4"

If I was not the one behind the wheel I`d never believe it!

florida gator 10-02-2002 08:39 PM

That's great news! Shoud the advance in timing have an adverse affect on the engine? I have a 21' Donzi, same motor. I need to have the heads redone this winter. I want to keep the motor as close to stock (for reliability) as I can. Yet, I want to increase my top end (mainly for fuel efficiency). Any ideas out there?

cuda 10-02-2002 10:16 PM

Gator, what model and year is the Donzi?

florida gator 10-03-2002 08:32 AM

1990, GT210. It is very practical for the family right now, yet still allows me to have a good time . I want to start getting around to some other areas soon. Mainly Clearwater & ST Pete areas, but do not want to be swamped by the big boats. I have thought of joining OPBA, down your way. They say they have boats as small as 18' participating in some of their events.

Biggus 04-30-2003 10:19 AM

Well, now that spring is finally here I put the little Pachanga in the water yesterday. My best run last fall was 64.0 on gps. This is a bone stock 350 Mag. I just bolted up an Alpha SS drive and was looking for some free mph. With the SS drive and the same 23 Vengeance it would not hook up at all prop slip was bad. I changed the prop to a 23 Mirage Plus and it was much better although it was still a little trickey to get on plane. My best run this morning was 61.8 on gps.

So, if anyone with a Pachanga 22 was thinking of going to an Alpha SS, it doesn`t work as well as the stock drive. I guess the X-dimention is pretty high from the factory and the SS makes it a little too high.

What a cool little this is!I am so impressed, runs an honest low 60`s with a stock 350 Mag with mufflers :D

jafo 04-30-2003 10:36 AM

Kurt-
Before you codemn the SS as a bad move, try bolting up a REV4 prop to that bad boy- maybe a 22". The fourth blade may give you the little extra bite needed to unleash the potentials of the SS.
DO NOT bolt up a Brava One 4-blade propeller to an Alpha drive of any type...........=BOOM

Biggus, do you have any pictures of it posted anywhere? Ive only seen a handful of these boats. Pretty cool looking!

The Reindl One Design boats are a true testament to the title of the thread. Never have I had so much fun in a small boat, and the handeling of the waves amazed me. The boat is a blast to drive.
