Tuff 28' - Educate Me
3 Attachment(s)
So what is the low down on this o/b model? I read the threads and info on the 21' Tuff with the Ilmor 570, and the 28' with the Ilmor 710, but what about this 28 with the twin o/b 400's? Speed, prop size, rpm at WOT, gear ratio, 15" mids (looks like 20" midesections to me), overall weight, and list price? I know the first response to this thread should-would be is to call Mark Weigl (owner of Tuff), but I am a dreamer - tire kicker, and I won't waste a man's time with a call like that, out of respect. So let the members of OSO educate me.
I like all of the Tuff line up including the 16' with the 90hp o/b/. Cool boats. |
If you are interested, call Mark...probably one of the straightest shooters when it comes to defining if his boats suit a clients expectation... they definitely perform!

What's the deadrise on those boats? The entry looks more suited to lake use than chop, but I could be wrong.

I think you'll learn a lot more about those boats on S&F than you will here.

Funny you ask...this just came into the country:

Thanks guys, Scream and Fly had the answer, here it is for speed estimate,
"The tuff with the 400's runs currently a hair over 100, it needs more setup time. It is not done there but the diffusers need to come of the props to settle the back end down. It is expected once dialled in that it will run 110-115. The owner is coming from stern drives and is getting used to it. I have seen it out a lot. It is a pretty boat. The 400's are less than impressive, they don't have the pull you would expect and sound like a seadoo. Smarty, stop playing. Come over my shop and look and my stuff…enough is enough with this business.

I am just a tie kicker, not a real prospect. Has your boat been wet yet? Testing done? Let me know, let OSO know, time to show the world |
I just took a new TUFF 28 to PPI interiors last week. I hope to have it back next month to start the rigging. I have already custom painted it. It will have a pair of 300xs outboards. It will be for sale when completed. I have a thread on the complete build on Scream and Fly. I can't post pics here. Here's the link.

Wildman what's your opinion of this boats capacity on a ruff day in the intercostal or even out ocean side?
|
I have not been in one yet. This is the first one in the country. I must say that it looks like one of the best built boats I have seen. I have made some changes inside the transom area behind the rear seat to make it more usable and much more "dressed up" (flat storage area, bigger transom knees, etc) I know the rear deadrise is 22 degrees, but I'm not sure if the flat pad area will effect the ride or not. I'm sure the pad is the main reason for the boats high speeds. It's more of a high speed hot rod than an offshore pounder. I'm hoping for over 100 mph with the 300's. It ran 92 with 250's and those motors were mounted 2.5" below the pad. Mine will be on a "Porta" bracket that can lift the motors 12" so I can get them as high as needed. This boat will have the best of everything with no expense spared.
|
Sounds like a good set up. I've been looking at these for a while. I suspected that speed is due in large part to width, weight, and the pad. They do look great. Nice design. Just wondering if your out in Biscayne bay down here and weather gets bad how will it handle or even a run in 1 to 2 or occasional 3ft. where do you plan to run it.
|
The 28 is a full 8ft wide and not really a light boat. Hull and full interior was 2840 when I weighed it. The bare hull with tank and rear hatch is probably about 2600 lbs. It will be for sale when I finish it. (I sell Liberator tunnel boats, Talon 22, and Checkmates now) (Liberator Boats of Florida) I will not run it in Saltwater before it's sold. I will run it in several big lakes where we get 3-4's occasionally.
|
Finally got the TUFF 28 done. It will be for sale once I get it on the new trailer this week. I ran it last week at 98.3 mph on a 1.25 mile long lake. Since I can't post pics here, there are the finished pics here starting at post 153. http://www.screamandfly.com/showthre...8-build-thread
