Dry Ice Blasting
I'm having a hard time finding someone who can soda blast the hull of my boat. I need to strip off decades of gel, paint or whatever is there so I can re-epoxy paint.
I found a dry ice blaster that has never done a boat hull before but he is willing to try. Per his request I sent him some pics so he could quote the job. Anyone have experience dry ice blasting off paint/gel ? Any idea what it might cost me to get the hull done (20 ft boat) as well as the trailer it sits on? From what I have read it has major cleanup advantages but I could find any real info on how good/bad of a job it might do for my intended use. Any downsides to dry ice blasting? Thanks! - scott - |
I have seen dry ice blasting to clean up wood, brick light paint and other things it is great for dirt and clean up of old buildings but I am not sure about actual paint or gel. It is awesome for clean up compared to other media blasting but it has its limitations with actually removing material. I would have him try it and then see if it will work for the entire boat.

We use a dry ice blaster to clean and pm plastic injection molds where I work. It does a good job of cleaning up baked on residue and films from grease and chemicals from metal. We've tried using it to strip paint and primer off the concrete floors without so much luck.

There is videos on YouTube, removing anti foul, looks realivilty effective.

We've used dry ice blasting many times, I would not use it for cleaning fiberglass without a test on another junk hull! Without knowing the grind of the ice, it could end up looking like you used rocks from the train tracks to clean the hull, probably not a desired result....

It's starting to sound like dry ice blasting is really clean and effective for some things, but taking off layers of paint doesn't appear to be one of them
WHat do auto body shops use to remove paint? |
soda and someone that knows what they are doing:lolhit:

You're going to have to break out the long boards and sandpaper.
