Hull question
Hi all!!! Purchased my first boat. It's a 2001 Baja H2X. Here's my question. A Baja outlaw came up near me and I assumed wanted to go fast. I outran him. Saw him at a dock later. He said I only outran him because I have a shallow hull. What does he mean? What's a shallow hull?
Thanks Mark |
shallow ='s deadrise. ( depth of the V )
the H2X is something like a 20* bottom, where an Outlaw is 24* |
Thank you. Why would the dead rise be a factor in speed? I'm thinking it affects the way it handles chop and waves. I better do some reading about boat things. Lovin it so far.

Hull degree aside, often times in grudge racing, if you're the winner, the other guy has a reason why he, woulda, coulda. And shoulda won, but didn't. :musik010::musik010:
This goes for anything with an engine. Ha! |
If he knew this, about your shallow hull, wonder why he wanted to run you....
|
No idea. I didn't know that. Lol. Maybe he gave into the bikini pressure. He had more half naked chics than I did. I had one. My wife. So that automatically doesn't count. :daz:

You and your wife are enjoying your new boat, you've beaten some guy who picked on a faster boat. Isn't that all that matters? Lol. I'm sure you'll beat a few more but remember, there's always someone faster out there.....
As mentioned already, a shallow deadrise is usually quicker than a similar deeper V but there is a trade off, maybe difference in the rough water handling. Baja sold a lot of h2x hulls with many happy customers, for good reason, congrats on the ride. Now you're into boating, keep active on here, oso is a great resource for all things boating. I have learned a lot here in a couple of years and it's all interesting stuff. Welcome! RR |

This goes for anything with an engine. Ha! the sun was in my eyes, the moon is in the wrong phase, my biorhythm is off. hang around a race course long enough and you hear it all. |

#1 no fat chicks (fat chicks = ballast weight) #2 too many fountain skanks in a Baja will have the same effect as fat chicks #3 when racing, never more than a 1/4 tank of gas, so as not to drag extra weight (or use the I ran out of gas excuse if yer getting yer azz handed to you)... #4 if you get beat, use the 'ol "wrong prop for this water" and other prop is at the shop... :party-smiley-004: |
Generally speaking, the less deadrise a hull has (or the "more shallow" it is), the faster it will be. The reason is that a hull with more deadrise will tend to cut through a wave rather that "pancaking" over it. The flip side of the equation is that "shallower" hulls tend to ride rougher in any kind of rough water. On calm water, a hull with more deadrise will tend to ride lower in the water (because its trying to cut through it rather than ride up and over it) and thus have more wetted surface which equals more drag and thus less speed. Various "tricks" have been applied over the years in attempts to get a hull to not only cut through the rough stuff, but have the top end of a flat sheet of plywood. "Stepped" hulls are probably the most commonly seen example of this, but they introduced all sorts of other issues.
What most folks have found is that you need to match the amount of deadrise to the type of waters you most often run in. If you only run on rivers where "rough" means a 6" chop, you can get away with a pretty flat hull that goes like stink without a ton of horsepower. If however you run on a big lake or the ocean, you're probably going to want a 24 degree deadrise hull to cut through the big stuff that's almost always out there. If you run a 24 degree hull on most rivers, it'll ride great, but just about everyone will kick your butt. If however you try to run a Hydrostream in ocean waters, you'll find that it will not only ride like a floor jack, but everybody with more deadrise will walk right by you. |
After owning 2 Superboats, usually after I smoked somebody their excuse would be that I had a narrow beam. Some boats are FAST on flat or rough water.
|
Yep back in the early 70s used to get smoked by little Glastron jets in our twin inline six 26 Monza that would barely hit 50.
Glastron Guys would run their mouth, tell them to take the race out to Lake Michigan, nope their response was , I already beat you. Learned not to enter in a race in smooth water. |
If you enter a race and you win, you win. If you lose, you lose.
Simple concept. Edit in: best strategy I have found is to not meet up and talk to the person later. Let them think what ever they want. |

Let me translate what the Outlaw owner really meant: "You only outran him because you have a faster boat" That is literally all there is to it. lol. |

Wait until your 600hp 19' boat gets beat by a 12 year old on a jet ski you will understand what he was saying. lol.
