VoodooRob - any idea what the rationale was behind insurance requiring a survey? I guess you could claim a $20K boat is a $1M boat and insure it for the same then sink the thing and claim the $1M loss???....yea right :D Idiot trivia, did you know the term underwriting came from the marine industry? (see 3rd paragraph)

My take on horsepower has always been there is no such thing a too much, till it breaks.
Few boats ago I had one that was, as it turned out, too much. Not for me! But too much for the Bravos! All seven of them! |
Isnt that the year formula that acquired the name "the widow maker"? Something about the drives not being right on the boat and it J hooking randomly throwing everyone out of the boat???? Could of swore I read that in the past somewhere.
I went through 9 XR drives last year alone with detuned 850hp in a heavy cat. Formulas are very heavy as well, and if that boat has 1300hp a side, god help you and your check book!!!lmao. I now have SCX-4 on the boat and after 3 times out, no drive issues. I like when everyone is up and running, makes powerboating fun. 1300hp and bravos, there isn't going to be sh*t fun about it for you brother.....that's the gospel!! |

I believe that might be the chit storm Formula had with the new Merc Axius systems. Formula had a few of the SunSports that pitched a few happy folks into the drink, and injured a few as well. The boats decided to take real abrupt high speed turns, somewhat to the surprise of all those onboard, including the operator. At our marina we had an Axius boat decide that the gas dock kid was a fair target one afternoon, an took a run at him. That one was a Sea Ray, and was traded back in before the sun set that day. |
I went from modded 260 merc outboards, needing freshening ever 115 hours to 225 promaxes. Lost 10 mph on top end withour much setup but.............the price to rebuild the promaxes are 1/6th the price. I have the same 80+ mph cruise speed and have literally hundreds of trouble free hours on powerheads. I had the 260s on a 26' vee , $400.00 a year to insure with progressive. Bought a Talon and put my motors on and progressive, after saying they would insure me dropped me like a hot potato. Phuck progressive and Mercury and yes I did say phuck Mercury. They just quoted me $480.00 for a plastic thrust bearing worth $5.00. PHUCK MERCURY. Find a "reputable" builder in your area and don't get to carried away with hp or the big number. Did I say Phuck Mercury!!!!!!

I believe the op is looking at a boat with 1300hp TOTAL??

I had trouble getting insured with my Powerquest. There was a few that said no and a few that would, but huge premiums. I ended up with Grange and they didn't require a survey, but my buddy has a 340 Rinker and they required a survey on his... Difference is mine is insured for 32k and his is 55k.
|
O... And they didn't ask my motor package, just year make and model. The company's that turned me down don't insure boats over 65 mph and I guess there systems tell them it's over.

Insurance is there when you don't need them, but not there when you do need them.
