Question about title swapping...is elmer fudd going to jail?
Generally speaking when you purchase a boat the current owner signs over title acknowledging the new owner. When the new owner then takes that title to register the boat a new title is issued listing them as the new owner. I realize states do this differently, in this case state of interest would be Minnesota.
I am asking because I was presented with a photo of a title held by a current boat owner and on the title presented, it listed the owner prior to the current seller. It makes me wonder if the current owner ever registered the boat or for that matter if the current owner is even legally the "on paper" owner? Same deal with the trailer. SO, morries rubber duck boat emporium sells a rubber duck boat to donald duck. donald duck sells the rubber duck boat to elmer fudd. donald duck signs over a title to elmer fudd. owner/seller listed on the title is morries boat emporium with the purchaser being elmer fudd. elmer fudd takes his title to the government to have his pocket picked. Are the mounties going to be there to slap cuffs on elmer fudd or is this a legitimate transaction? If not, are there non scandalous theories on how this happens and could be corrected? |
How is that different that buying a car and flipping it? He just took a while to flip it...

I would be thrilled if this were the case. |
Car dealers do it all the time. If you trade in your car to a dealer that car will be prepped, serviced and put on the lot for sale right away. If dealers had to wait for titles to come back from dmv they would be out of buisness.

Called "skip title" in Florida. The craigslist guys do it so they dont have to pay registration. Not legal, but commonly done here.

But boat profile is too low profile for Darr......he couldn't have lasted this long without asking a question about a 2000 HP motor that runs on pump gas and some goofy polycarbionic windshield BS (note he should just call it a "wishshield" at this point). |
That's how my boat was when I bought it. Guy I got it from never registered it. One difference being I was given power of attorney papers from the original owner concerning the boat. No problems titling and registering it.
