Need info on buffalo ny lake ontario area please
couple questions for you folk!
planning to do erie canal from waterford down to tonawanda up to oswego thru lake ontario
1- looks like a 535 miles trip, friend would follow with a 28 single 496 so i said plan for 535 gal of fuel can it be worst than that? With so much idle i would think it could be almost half of this but sure not more right?
2- the only way out from tonawanda to lake ontario must be thru the welland canal right?
3- anything else i should know?

Sorry I can’t answer your questions, I would assume your gonna be doing ALOT of idleing.
when your saying Waterford are you talking about Waterford, next to cohoes, and Clifton park?

I would think you have (4) options for getting into Lake Ontario from Tonawanda:
1. Welland Canal
2. Niagra Falls
3. Trailer
4. Turn around and go back on the Erie canal

Jeff if you are looking to get from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario the only way is though the Welland canal. Not that bad but locks are covered with slime so you might want old bumpers.

The entire New York State Canal System will close for the season on Wednesday, October 10th at 5 p.m.
It's an amazing trip and the Flight of Five at Waterford is spectacular. The 40' lift in Little Falls is the tallest single lift. Prior to Little Falls lock there is a floating dock for General Nicholas Herkimer's home now a free state park. It's worth the stop if a history buff. It was Herkimer at the Battle of Oriskany that sent British General Barry St Leger packing back to Canada after the failure at Ft Stanwix. (A little poke at my Canadian friends lol) I use to Captain for Erie Canal Cruises in Herkimer, NY. There are long boring stretches during the trip and if you bump the speed up too fast the Lock Operators will know by your time. They talk to each other and can ticket you but I've seen most get away with a warning so long as not a a hole. Bring two pairs of rubber gloves to handle the lines as you lock through as the lock lines get full of slime. You do not tie you boat up as being lifted or lowered only hold yourself to the wall with a deck hand or spring line if near a cable. Many great walls to tie up along the way with nearby amenities and lots of history. I'd suggest Waterford to Amsterdam to Utica to the Sylvan Beach wall as legs. Across Oneida Lake and you can head up to Oswego. Don't be too much in a hurry and good luck!
