Skater heading North bound on the turnpike twin O/B
So yesterday we decide to take a car ride to Orlando from Palm beach and On my way north cruising @ 80 mph on the pike , Here come's a truck pulling a Outboard skater passing me like I was sitting still :) easy 100 + mph .
Now 100 mph on the water is nice but behind on a trailer :( I have been towing boats and trailers for close to 30 years and max speed towing was around 70 mph for safety reason " max tire speed " . "Sorry for venting " I just thought it was crazy MIke |

I towed to LOTO and back then the keys, set the cruise on 80 as otherwise I would have been holding up traffic. Nothing worse than someone pulling a big boat like a 17' bay liner, with a Yamahaha,, 45 in the fast lane.
And we never use trailer tires. |
Maybe it was cheaper way to experience the benefits of a wind tunnel.
|
I suspect he was outrunning a cruiser wake, all while trying to pack air to save fuel.
|
I have run at 80 mph with 36 Skater 10.6 ' wide in tow up and down 95 without any issues as long as ball joints on truck are good and load is balanced. The Duramax got 4mpg reguardless of speed.

Something is wrong with your duramax

Wasn't my Skater or Duramax. It had an Edge tuner in it stating 4 mpg while underway. What kind of mileage should it have been getting or have others got towing a 36' cat full of fuel? Inquiring minds want to know?
10-11 at 75 mph 11-12 at 70 mph 13-14 at 60 mph |
Guess NOW I know why I get 10 lol
|
I towed a 33' outlaw 900 miles with my stock duramax around 70 to 75 mph and was getting 11mpg so 4mpg cant be right
|
When you have a tuner, you MUST hand calculate your mileage. The onboard computers are thrown off.

I transport boats 6k to 10k miles a month in my business (about 48k since Jan) . 5000 to 8500lbs , 30' and under. 65mph max speed ,1000 miles a day average. It takes a couple hours to get used to the slow pace, but its much, much easier on equipment . 5 trips Florida to Long Beach,California, loaded both ways and 8 trips Fla to Northeast with a !0 year old Ford Expedition w/HD tow package.

But I agree. I average 10.5-11.5 towing my Dominator 70-80 mph with my LML dmax. |
I love MPG threads on this board. Nobody gives a damn about 1 MPG on the water but 1 MPG extra towing is a big deal.
Math: $2.00 diesel / 10 MPG = $0.20 per mile $2.00 diesel / 11 MPG = $0.18 per mile etc....you get it 100 mile trip = $18 vs. $20 Towing at most MPG is the cheapest thing you'll do all day. Lord knows the beers at the local lake bar will surpass that delta super quick. |

In my experience, tuners always make the duramax fuel economy output on the DIC read HIGHER, not LOWER than actual.

anything can be towed at any speed not the issue, problem is regardless of what you are riding in you wont be able to stop make corrections with a load attached just cant. I prefer rigs at least go the speed limit and maybe up to 5 mph, anything more than that don't care what they say theyre putting everybody in danger.
