Sunsation 06 and below will get you 80 to 81, 06 and up stepped hulls will get you 83 to 85 and there is also a big difference in ride and cabin height in the stepped hull version

A 32 Velocity with 496 engines will get you into the 80s. There is one (not mine) in the classifieds.

He said closed cooling. That's why I said 496's otherwise you need to retrofit hp 500s etc and still a straight bottom Sonic will ride great but not have that top speed he is looking for.

Thank you everyone for the helpful insight. My only reason for wanting closed cooling is because now I'll be primarily in salt water. I know back in the day before closed cooling you would just freshwater flush after usr. Which will be done even with a closed system. Just figured with today's high performance engines everything is aluminum and that the salt would we reek havoc.

The 525 is closed and aluminum heads but most others are iron headed. Flush with salt away and you should be fine. I'd say ride in some of the boats. Any reason you're thinking just sunny or sonic? What about donzi, fountain again, AT? Closed cooling is basically 525s or 496s. Naturally 2 very different animals. Unless you add it to whatever you buy. For Atlantic I'd be looking in the 35 models meaning 33 AT, 35 fountain, 35 donzi, 358 sonic. Black motors will put all of them in low to mid 70s. Blue motors in the 80s. All better Atlantic boats than the 31 sonic or 32 sunny

I think of the 2 you mention, the 31 Sonic will handle the ocean better.

I have an 2005 32' with 496 HO's 82/83 GPS speed is where mine runs with a good trim set and two people. someone with more knowledge than me will step in and clarify but there was a hull design change in mid year 05, mine is an early model and has a 1/2 single step and sits very low to the water in the back. The newer hull is somewhere around 10" taller on the side is a twin step hull and sits much higher in the back. The new hull is slightly faster I believe with the same power. it has a decent size cabin best for getting out of the rain if you get caught in a storm I don't think it would be the best for overnight trips if you plan on staying on the boat. If your running in the Atlantic I would look for the newer model. When coming off plane in rough conditions I have taken waves over the swim step and taking in a few gallons of water.

I've been looking at some 35 fountains but they all seem to be under powered with 496's or 502's, the ones with the power HP 500 or better are asking big money. I have searched for some active thunders but they are hard to find. Not many out there for sale.

A single step 35 fountain is good for 75-77 with black motors. Not to shabby. Would be easy to make that a very reliable 80mph rig. They only made a few of the 33 ATs so they are.
