help. move large yacht? on a ship?

hey all. its been some time since i've been around here. being boatless sucks....
I am just thinkin..... say a fella wanted to get a large yacht from Washington state to New Jersey.
A-drive it? 7,200 miles through some "bad neighborhoods"..... Na !
B- Truck it? 80 feet long, 19.5 feet wide and 11.5 feet tall..... Not real easy but doable.
C- Put it on a ship......

I'm interested in the ship idea. I know some of you have moved boats by ship. who would you even call? what would it cost?

Thanks for any input,Joe

Drive it. No worries on "bad" neighborhoods. People run the canal daily.

I see boats that size being trucked from the east coast to Seattle often. The trucks take some weird routes to do it.

That's a permit load, it goes where each state says it can go. Not likely to be through any neighborhoods.

What 80 foot boat is only 11.5 tall? Non permit height is 13.5 .
20 foot wide is Way wide. Permits and hauling probably 60 thousand minimum .

10 thousand for marina fees and removing and installing over height items.

My buddies 42 foot 1985 Silverton was over 16in height with the flybridge on . Cost 7000 to take the flybridge on and off. Another 8000 for the marina and truck. This was simply from Michigan to Florida.

He went the Mississippi route , spent 16 thousand on fuel instead.

I bet that was a fun trip though!

Cant let the cat out yet but its an open express style. just a windshield and radar arch. 11'6 tall leaves you a foot an a half for the trailer and still under height. but yes the beam is the real issue! Your probably close on your estimate to truck. Im gonna call about putting on a ship now that I have a contact (THANKS)..... see what happens. I'm thinking 24 days and 60k in fuel to drive it by water myself plus cannal fees, plus repairs, plus aswering questions for shooting pirates....:picard1:

Thanks everyone for all the input so far. Joe

Thanks pete35fountain.. Theyre gonna call me tomorrow with info. Strange law ! cant Leave one U.S. port and enter another U.S. port.... Have to run it up river to canada then they can ship it to Florida. they dont go farther up the northest coast. So maybe I'll get a reason to do some florida boating and get a good ride home in it to NJ !

boot 09-06-2016 03:15 PM

maybe leave it down for key west ! have room for about 60 friends to watch the race!

Quinlan 09-06-2016 06:04 PM

there was a program on Discovery Channel...Megaships...that featured a fleet of ships specifically designed for this. There are 3 or 4 ships that sail the west coast into the Caribbean alone, and if I recall 8 dedicated ships in fleet. including a couple of ships that sink and maneuver into position under the yacht. I just can't remember the shiplines name and was too lazy to google any further than the first page.

Northern passage ????

Quinlan 09-07-2016 08:20 AM

Saw a cruise ship went thru escorted by an Ice breaker. 20K a head to ride along. Might help pay for fuel lol.

Companies like Dockwise have heavy lift ships for transporting vessels, http://www.yacht-transport.com/.

Also consider a shipping/logistics company to handle it all, some are http://www.petersandmay.com/, http://www.sevenstar-yacht-transport.com/, and http://united-yacht.com/.

Jones Act comes into play as only US flagged vessels can transit from US port to US port. Foreign flagged vessels have to depart from a Canadian (or other foreign) port when calling in the US.

tommymonza 09-07-2016 10:18 AM

No way you will do that for 60 thousand in fuel unless it is a single engine trawler like a Nordhaven.

Buddy took a 54 Bertram around the great loop 25 years ago when fuel was easily half . Spent 45000 in fuel..

Boat like that probably burns 40 gallons an hour at idle at 6 knots.

I m guessing some big 1600 horse MTUs in something that long.

Aqua Banshee 09-07-2016 11:59 AM

Baia? If so that could be a cool one

boot 09-07-2016 01:04 PM

Thanks everyone. Just got quote from place i called yesturday. by ship from Vancoover to florida is $70k..

And yes, its 1600hp MTU's x 2. very thursty...Im thinking, plan my next 3 or 4 vacations on it working my way around the coast. first from seattle to baja Cali.then next one to panama. next one to key west, then the last one back to NJ.

I should have it home in 4 years !

BigSilverCat 09-07-2016 02:15 PM

What is the cruise speed? What is its range? I know a couple guys that would drive it around, you could be on for pieces of the trip for vacation.
The north route would be an option too with about half the miles. It has been done in a center console with outboards so in that big of a boat should be no problem.

Truck may not cost as much as you think as long as it's not tall. I can check on truck price of you want. I checked on 86' x 20' from Michigan to Miami and it was only 17,000

boot 09-07-2016 02:49 PM

I thought they were kidding.... What and where is the northern route from seatle washington to New jersey? I must have missed that one.

F-2 Speedy 09-07-2016 04:12 PM

My buddy does boat transport, moved an 80 footer from Lauderdale to lake Cumberland, send me a pm with contact info if interested.

ImaPoser 09-07-2016 04:26 PM

Seattle to Duluth, Minn. via truck, run it from there home.

boot 09-07-2016 07:14 PM

wow ! I just mapped that out. what a difference. seattle to deluth by tuck is 1600 miles. and driving the boat from duluth through the lakes ,down the hudson to my place is another 1600 miles... thats i dfferent story there.

thinking..

thinking.....

boot 09-07-2016 07:51 PM

Once i get on the Hudson river thats south so thats DOWN HILL acording to the map !:lolhit:

BigSilverCat 09-07-2016 07:55 PM

Technically it's down hill all the way from deluth

Once it is on a truck that far it would be cheeper to truck it the rest of the way. But it would be more fun to drive the boat the rest of the way.
