Need a machinist
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...nname/4_11.jpg
I have these two V-drive shafts that either needs to be repaired or replaced. They are out of round or one has a slight bend in it. I can’t really figure it out being it is slight and all I have is a dial indicator and a couple old bearings to work with. I did figure out that when gear lash is set proper half a turn it’s normal and the other half it mashes the gear teeth together. The shafts are 8 and 11 inches and little less than 2 inches in thickness at its widest point. Who has a CNC machine or a 3D printer (lol) they are itching to work with? |
General propeller out of Bradenton use to straighten all my 12 foot long inboard prop shafts, and get them perfect.
Give them a call and tell them what you got . |
How hard are the shafts? Can you knick them with a file?
If you cant find anyone to remake them I can do it for you, I own a cnc lathe and mill!! |
Check them with a hardness tester. They are most likely hardened, you would have to machine, heat treat and then grind to size.
|
I don't think they are hardened being they can be dented pretty easy. They are Stainless steel though.
|
depending on how bad the shafts are you could have the gears pressed off...then have a machinist check the shafts and possibly straighten ...they could also do a hard chrome plate and then grind straight again...
|
Are those out of a Casale Gearbox?
|
Wally,
Sorry about that, the gears come off easy enough I just didn't have a picture with them off. How much can chrome add? I'm thinking one is off by .008 or something but I could be wrong (+ or -). They look really simple. Just is I don't do it or have the tools. Like I said someone with a CNC or such machines could do it in seconds from what I see on you tube. Bob, yes it is. One looks standard Casale but one shaft is totally custom. I have spoken to them in the past and would prefer to use them as a last resort. The shafts are nothing they have off the shelf and would have to custom make them anyway. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...nname/5_10.jpg PS, some of the measurements would need to be changed but only by thousandths if making new. |
I work in a shop here in Ohio and could get you a quote as long as you know mat'l and if they need to be hardened or not? Also if they need to be ground and what kind of tolerances you are looking for.
|
Any two stroke crankshaft rebuilders in your area? They would have truing stands and tools/skills necessary to straighten you out.Good Luck!!!
|
I have a local general machinist in Severn that can make anything you could think of. I'll send you a pm with a name and number. He is extremely well versed in power transmission components.
|
if they are stainless they would have to be custom I would think, the ones in my Casale V-drive are both steel.
|
Hey mxz, being it spins up to 5000 rpms tolerances are pretty tight. The only thing I can find out from Casale of what they are made from is “Aircraft alloy steels” which who knows what it is being they use that line in every advertisement. I now don’t think they are stainless steel being they are magnatic.
Micky, I will call him tomorrow. I live in Pasadena, Severn is around the corner. Comp, I think you are right. I finished taking them apart and did some real measurements. They are even simpler than I thought. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...enname/6_6.jpg |
Actually those tolerances are not tight at all.... lol..... I don't see why they would need to be ground. Also there is magnetic stainless but it is doubtful that they are.
|
f_in, I'm helping a friend repower a boat and will most likely use Casale v-drives. Could I pick your brain sometime about the drives and the company? I don't have much experience with them. I'm local...Annapolis area.
|
I think you are better off making new ones. A pre-hard 4340 would be a good material. You really need to determine the ID of the gears and spec for a press fit. Then look up the bearing specs and get a recommended fit also.
http://www.amesweb.info/FitTolerance...eImperial.aspx If you get stuck I have a local guy here in FL that can do it. We have the equipment but not the time :( |
Thanks folks for the help. Took them to a local guy. He seemed to know all the same people that I trusted in the area and came across as knowing what he is doing. Making new. Have my fingers crossed.
|
fingers crossed...
|
Mickeymcclgn’s guy (Robert) kicked ass.
Two day turn around, great guy, listens, gives great feedback, extremely cheap, does great work… You need a machinist in Maryland get ahold of Mickey or me and we will pass his info along. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...nname/7_10.jpg |
Those look well done, if you don't mind me asking what did it cost to get done?
|
$525
Casale quoted me 5 years ago when I first wanted it done, over $1500 just for the shafts (without shipping across the country both ways and the weeks if not months of waiting). Robert also cleaned up and centered the gears and made a drawing (with real measurements) for future changes if I decide to do them (like different gears). He may also be able to make or have made gears that haven't been available for 50 years |
F_I, Wow Looks great. Machinist someone local was icing on the cake.
|
Mark, what was to steel of choice for the shafts?
Ken |
Awesome, they look great! Good price too.
