Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have demonstrated a production method they estimate will reduce the cost of carbon fiber by as much as 50 percent and the energy used to produce it by more than 60 percent. According to the ORNL, cost has been “the single largest roadblock to widespread use of carbon fiber as a strong, stiff reinforcement for advanced composites.” Additionally, more than 90 percent of the energy needed to manufacture CFRP comes from manufacturing the carbon fiber itself....
