Blackhawk & Black Max Trans
I am looking for a Black Max transmission. Does anyone know where to get one?

I don't even know what a Black Max transmission is? Is it a 2 -speed tranny?
|
The BlackMax tranny was developed by Mercury Marine, originally intended to be used with the Blackhawk outdrive. I believe it is a two-speed. I am finding that info is limited. The tranny is small. I once heard of a 22 Daytona with an extension box and Blackhawk, utilizing the trans in the extension box. I will be running a set of 31s and 1:36 gears and would like to try this setup. Just doing research.

Sorry I can't be more help. I also heard of a Daytona(22 or 25) running a STOCK 502 with a 2 speed tranny and a blackhawk drive. Ran damn close to 100mph!!!

Try calling Performance Marine in Oshkosh. There is a Gary Meisenburg (Senior) that hangs out there. His son is an employee. Gary was involved in the design/development of the blackhawk and is a great source of info.
BTW-He has a 26' Talon with a warm 502 that runs in the mid 90's, so I would think that a 22 should be over 100-especially with a box. |

Rod-what are the advantages to running the trans? The drive is still shifted, right?
|
Tim, for conversation sake - its a two speed tranny that shifts - thus allowing you to go faster just like in your car. You can go faster in drive or overdrive than you can in 1st or 2nd. It can be setup to run with mercruiser efi system or shifted manually.
|
The problem is that 1st gear is lower and 2nd is 1:1. It is not an overdrive trans. It allows big props to idle around the dock and eo help in taking off and plane faster, not run faster.
|
cobra,
What's the difference? I think the point is to have good idling and getting on plane so you don't load the hell out of your motor and drive. So what would it matter if it was an overdrive and you kept your stock props or 1st gear reduces and you use bigger props? |
