Dan Stomber boat builder Lapeer, MI Icon Powerboats

I've recently been working with a guy from Lapeer, Michigan by the name of Dan Stomber. He is new to the boat building game but from what I can tell, he is building some SICK CC cats! He has agreed to let me do "whatever I want" with the console in one of his demo boats he's working on. My expertise comes from the automitive industry where I focus on electronics and instruments. I recently wrapped up the "cockpit" for the 19' vette. Because I am new-ish to the boating world and attempting to broaden my area services, Is there anything you guys as boat owners would like to see in an upscale CC offshore console you don't see out there now? Input would be appreicated!

Thanks in advance,

Steve M.

How about some info on the 19 Vette! : )

I wish I could do that! ;)

Forget the boats vette info needed! The test mule pictures have been floating around some call it a ZR1 some call it Z06X.
Back to your question, people love technology. I really like the new touch screens but with a few big gauges for running hard, my personal preference. Also carbon fiber dash, adjustable foot and seating.

I would google his name before you get too involved .

I'm a big boy and capable of doing my due diligence but thanks. I asked him upon meeting him about the sex offender issue as I do my research on anyone I do business with. He had a relationship with his daughter's mother when he was 18 and she was 15 more than 16 years ago... He seems to have a very respectful daughter who was a product of that relationship... I do know he was removed from the registry years later after the charge was removed given the circumstances. I do not see a court granting a father full custody of a little girl if he is in any way a threat, especially in Michigan.

As to the bad check, I have never questioned it but I did see the post here. I assume there's more to that story ad he has a pile of outdrives in his shop and also does not appear to be hurting for money from what I gather. The guy has a MONSTROUS amount of EVERYTHING from cars, boats, parts, motors and whatever that he buys and sells daily, he's in another state or country at least once a month for hunting or vacation I can't see him not having funds for a "small" purchase like that. I suppose when you're buying and selling anything in large amounts you're bound to come across someone who wasn't happy with the way the deal went down.... I am not defending anyone either way just doesn't come across as that type of guy, I've been working with him on stuff for about a year and had zero issues at all, really a pleasure to work with/for. The car deal, I did just look up, seems strange. Who buys a car, send money, picks it up without grabbing the title? The buyer of the car seems almost to have created the thread more to boast about it than actually try to resolve anything. He has all his info right down to his address where he picked it up if you're that upset and you know where he lives, why not go there or send someone?? He seems to have gotten it resolved from what can be read in the post. Doesn't add up to me. but hey, you found it on the internet it must be true right?? I know Dan isn't big on the internet thing or social media because he doesn't seem like the type not to respond to that type of thing.

Google your local car dealer or anyone selling anyone and see if EVERY post is favorable. We live in a world where people post virtually anything about anyone unfortunately. Again, my experiences with him have been nothing but pleasant. He seems to treat everyone around him like family and I am yet to see anyone show up at his shop claiming he shorted them on anything...

Back to my original post, Input is appreciated. No need to help with internet investigations but thank you for taking time out from your very busy day to assist...

Where is Icon Powerboats located?

Is it one-post wonder season already? I thought we usually wait until the snow starts to fly a little...

I am also interested in hearing more about Icon Powerboats. I live just a few minutes outside of Lapeer

Wally 10-11-2016 09:20 AM

any reason they have a pic of a Mystic on their facebook page? If its a boat company why post pics of others products?

His office is located in Lapeer but his shop is in Clio which works out great for me I can jump right off 75 on my way out of work to drop in. I spoke with Dan briefly this morning and he said once all the models are completed and they're in full production hopefully mid-next year he will be happy to give a shop tour. It's a pretty cool place as far as I can tell with all the equipment such as CNC machines they use to cut out different parts and stuff. The whole process is fascinating to me...

As to a FB page with a Mystic boat, I asked here's his response, "I wish I had the time to play on the internet if someone has a Icon page doing advertising on my behalf I greatly appreciate it (laughing). I do not subscribe to social media or any other forms of advertising at this time. All of our work comes from word of mouth and networking. Once we are in production I intend to use those tools to promote our product. We are so overwhelmed pulling, storing and repairing boats right now if I had an hour to myself I wouldn't be on fb I would be taking a nap, do people really have that much free time?"

AGAIN, my post was to inquire about things boat owners would like to see on boats and NOT to respond to unrelated questions. I do not want to sound rude but I find it rude for people to continually ignore the post and go on with questions that are not specific to the post. for the couple guys asking, send me a private message I can get you over Dan's info and I'm sure he will be more than happy to show you around his place when time allows. Thanks.

Understand what you are saying in previous post, but it also appears you are trying very hard to sell the man and minimize some of his known issues. It makes it seem like you have an agenda beyond what you originally asked.

Wireless position sensors / gauges for trim tabs and drive trim. :D

A telescoping stripper pole in front of the console seat would be amazing.

mactech 10-11-2016 01:38 PM

I am simply defending a person I feel I know pretty well. I came here for some suggestions from boaters and ended up with a bunch of nonsense comments that weren't needed. They selected themselves to the judge and jury and roll out a verdict on a guy they know nothing about nor the transactions that took place based on some old info they found online. I just don't get it. I mean is that what their day consists of? If someone posted here that "scarabman is a scam and I found on google...." should that really be considered relevant? When did google become the utmost authority on verifying information? I wouldn't give the comment about you a second thought. But again I will reiterate, MY POST IS TO GATHER THOUGHTS ON THINGS BOATERS WOULD LIKE TO SEE ON BOATS IN THE FUTURE AND NOT FOR BORED FOLKS TO RUN A GOOGLE BACKGROUND CHECK FOR ME.

From what I gather around the shop there those are going to be standard equipment on every boat! ;)

Will there be a brass or stainless option ?

Knot 4 Me 10-11-2016 02:06 PM

There are plenty of custom builders and highly-skilled marine shops today that can pretty much do whatever a customer can dream up (within reason). If you and this builder have outside the box things in mind and are looking to gauge interest then please, provide some details. Otherwise, this thread will continue to go sideways. Or is it Sydwayz?!

the stripper pole that spins on bearings is right up there with the discovery of fire

Why are you upset that people googled him when you say you googled him yourself? Why did you bother to google him if the results are irrelevant?
Your best bet for advice is to get ahold of a guy named Jim Darr. He knows a lot about the industry and he'll be happy to help.

While your at it, get Bill Hionas involved for trades/financing and Chris Sunkin involved for marketing and lawn I beam/pool installations around the factory! :D

This Icon idea has trouble written all over it.

I googled the company and relevant info regarding USCG wiring standards and his name was associated, seemed to be the appropriate thing to do as I am new to the marine instrumentation... I assumed this would be a friendly place to gather some info but it appears I was wrong. The negative comments that are unrelated to my question are irrelevant. The question wasn't about him, it was about what would YOU guys like to see as far as instrumentation on marine consoles? Actually pretty simple and straight forward.

The MTI and Mystics have the best dashes I've seen on CCs I don't think you could do much more with them at the current time

FWIW. Lazy, cheap research. Get out on some performance boats, help sponsor some poker runs, go to some races. Visit some boat builders. Visit some engine builders. You act like you are doing us a favor. Marketing research isn't easy nor is it cheap.

Hey sparky...

I believe the guys here have been trying to save your azz not penetrate it...

My guess is that if you're a real person, and that's a big if, you'll be back in a couple months complaining how he ripped you off.

I have a pretty cool system in my race car. I can set vital information without watching the gauges. Example is oil pressure, there is a led ring around gauge at 50 psi the led lights at 40 psi it blinks and becomes brighter at 20 psi it rapid flashes and if it flashes like that for 3 seconds it will kill the ignition. All vitals are self programmed including the tach.

ProParts SPEK gauges?

yes it took awhile to get used to but now wouldn't have anything else. Had a dry sump belt break my fault alignment and it saved a very expensive motor.
