665 inch BBC for LaveyCraft NuEra29 build
 

It's not everyday I get to play at this level. I've been collecting parts for a Marine 665 inch *naturally aspirated* BBC. That's 4.600" bore x 5.000" stroke. The Winberg billet crankshaft just showed up today :) I also have a photo of the Crower billet 7.325" long rods next to a stock length Manley rod for comparison. Custom RaceTec pistons, etc.

I'm going to photo document the assembly of this engine as I go so you can see how I do it. That doesn't mean I'm right or wrong, it's just how I do it. I won't get going on this until after PRI sometime, but I thought I'd share the start of it.

The very first thing I did was pick out a block. I decided on a Dart Big-M pro. The reason for this was that I could get it in an 11.1" deck, it already came with 55mm cam bearing bores, .903" lifter bores, steel caps, and it has room for a 5" stroke with the spread pan rails and .600" raised camshaft position.

The next thing I did was to select a ring set. Why were rings #2 you ask? I needed to know the ring width and radial depth before I could order pistons. I also had to decide on a cylinder head so the correct valve angles, location, and spacing would be known. Once we figured out the rings (.043x.043x3mm in this case) I ordered the pistons. I am shooting for 9.5:1 compression or a tick more so I ordered the pistons with a 24cc dish figuring a 119cc combustion chamber. Once I knew the pin height on the pistons I could order the connecting rods. 11.1" deck - 1.27" pin - 2.5" (1/2 stroke) -.005" (piston to deck) = 7.325" rod.

After the block, rings, pistons, and rods were delivered and bearings were mocked up in the block, everything was checked dimensionally and weighed. The crankshaft was ordered to bob-weight . I would have ordered it to a finished pin size rods and mains but that was an extra 8 weeks (Winberg had a semi-finished 5" stroke partially finished) so I may have to play with bearing shells to get the clearance I want.

At the same time, the Brodix BB3XO-332 cnc oval port heads are at Chad Speier's (Speier Racing Heads) place getting worked over to meet the requirements that I have for this engine. That meant a camshaft had to be ordered so I knew the peak lift and then the valves, springs, retainers, locks, and locators were also ordered.

As you can see, one little decision affects the entire package. It's best to write it all down on paper before you ever order a single part.

Nice build but think you need more cylinder head for the cubes.
That thing will make a bunch of torque.

The goal is 900hp. These heads will go there with ease.

This is gonna be a badass build!

But an engine thread on OSO, at the beginning of fall? I'm predicting 300 pages plus... :food-smiley-007:

As exotic as this piece is it's going to take some time to get it together correctly. I'm going to do my best at a photo documentary and post here as the build goes along. I hope to be on the dyno with it before the end of February. Really our goal is to duplicate the performance of something like a Teague 825 but without the supercharger.

How big of a camshaft you going to run? I ran the 351xo brodix that did run 900hp they make great power. How much work is chad going to do to them? Thanks

Cam is 267/271 @ .050", .775" ish lift, and 114 LSA.

Chad is doing whatever he needs to ;)
