Doug Wright building new 35 foot cat
.
Doug Wright is building a brand new 35 foot cat Model Name 35 RT . |
.
The CNC machines are once again running and shaping the foam that will build Doug Wright's next 35 foot cat. The design has come from his winningest 32 foot cat in both OPA and SBI. Because the new hull is a Computer Aided Design (CAD), he's able to bypass the traditional build the plug-then-mold methods, by going straight to building the mold. He's able to do this because CAD drawings already have the specifications for the (female) mold. And by doing so, the design, build, and production stages are cut in half, saving Doug Sr and Jr time and cost. The video below shows the large CNC machine cutting away the foam for the mold which will become the tooling for the new 35 foot cat. ...and further below is the computer renderings of the new Doug Wright 35 RT pleasure cat. According to Doug, the first one is already sold and two more deals are currently being worked on. . |

CNC machine shaping the new 35 foot cat mold. Using CNC machines will enable the part to be symmetrically identical thus making the mold perfectly straight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7VPI2ayyz4&feature=youtu.be |

The latest computer renderings of the 35 RT When customers want new enhancements to the hull, all that Doug does is to go to the CAD renderings, adjust the specifications, mill a new part and the part fists perfectly in the build. From the visible transom design cues, I see cutouts for the outboards. Possibly 400R, 400ROS, and 7-Marine motors? http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/...T/35-FRAME.png http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/.../RT/35-ISO.png http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/.../RT/35-TOP.png http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/...RT/35-SIDE.png http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/.../35-TUNNEL.png |
My personal opinion is that the Doug wright cats have some of the nicest lines out there. Wish em the best with this new model
|
Could be a winner w 400(450)ROS motors and a 100mph cruise. The 32/34 DW w 700s was my 2nd choice when I bought my Skater. Ultimately the bigger hull size of my 3212 was a partial factor. A 35DW would definitely get my attention.

I like the way the pontoons taper forward versus the skaters

Noli,
Thank you for posting this, I always seem to learn something new from your posts, this DW new model, the Chaudron thread, Smart Marine Phoenix cat, ect..keep educating and informing me, thank you |
The first one is getting either the 400R's or the ROS's.

I already asked !!!!! Have personal ties to it.
Squatters electronics rights Bet the first one is Darren's. |

It's going to be an awesome rig for sure! I would love to see APBA bring back a modern day equivalent of Stock and Super Stock outboard classes. With the current Mercury outboard offerings, make Stock be 30'-32' twin 400ROS boats (X-Cat rules) and Super Stock be 34'-38' triple 400ROS boats. It would be so cool to see the new 34 MTI against the new 35 DW against a 368 Skater - all with triple 400ROS. Kudos to Doug for building this new boat, I'm sure it will be a big success!

When comparing a DW to a Skater the front sponsons are very different. On a Skater they become very "tall" before they taper to the bow which is the opposite of the DW. What are the functionality differences between each style?.

^^^^^^ hopefully someone who knows can chime in

The 35RT tunnel mold is complete. There are 3 parts to the mold (tunnel, 2 sponsons). The 3 parts are aligned with markers. the green color in the pics is the epoxy resin with glass. Further below, a thick putty substance is applied. This will be the coating that will be milled to bring the mold to within CAD model specs. click on image http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/...nnel_plug1.jpg http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/...nnel_plug2.jpg http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/...nnel_putty.jpg |

Putty-like material being applied. When the putty has dried and hardened, milling begins again to cut it down to CAD specs. http://youtu.be/tAtJLz4N5yI |

35RT Video #6 The putty-like material has dried and hardened. Milling has begun. This round of milling will cut the putty surface and get the mold closer to the CAD model specs. http://youtu.be/TMVe6zT1fLQ |

SportBoatNews by noli Final milling of the 35RT tunnel will be completed and the milling of the sponson will begin today http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/...ling_final.jpg |

http://i1238.photobucket.com/albums/.../SBN_logo2.png DougWright continues with the milling of the 35RT. This time he's doing one of the sponsons. Again, he's milling the mold directly bypassing the plug creation. I know the video is not clear but you can begin to see the steps of the hull being cut into the foam. There are markers on the three-piece mold to be sure that the alignment is precise. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIgE-cCWAEE |
