I'd go with Teak paddles. .Pine is probably ok for a spare set, as long as you treat them with Thompsons water seal.

Pretty Cocky thinking you can handle a Canoe after just a few years of experience hotrodding that Flatdeck.

Thinking a year with a standup paddle board and than maybe after that attend a Advanced Canoe Handeling course .

The insurance is still going to kill you with your minimal experience.

Should probably look at getting into SAILING.:evilb:

P.s.

With proper care I think the CMI headers that come on a Merc 525 should last a good 20 years.

The Detroits it seems like they had a hard enough time keeping them alive in busses and coaches. So they cranked them up and jammed them in big sport fishers lol. I have a customer with a pair of 550 hp 6-92's. When I called for a set of injectors the parts guy said "trying to melt that down before the weekend??" 2200 hours and the boat has had 4 major overhauls (by others not me)

Some Hopped Up Johnson and Towers Detroits ? A pair of Those 6-92s sound Sweet when their wound up in the right boat.

Covington's. Twin turbo, supercharged. They do sound cool, and run up pretty good. But they have been maintenance whores.

Wait, wait. I have a composite SUP, carbon fiber paddle. Recent survey, only used for fresh water yoga.

500efi with an SCX would be the ticket for reliability.

Drive guardian could be a good solution too.
