Fort Lauderdale, last night. The deceased guy was from Chicago, assuming it was the Nick Gaglione (the deceasd) I knew from there.

Police: Woman hurt in triple shooting in Fort Lauderdale bar recovering

The Associated Press
Posted October 6 2002, 5:45 PM EDT

FORT LAUDERDALE -- A woman critically wounded during a triple shooting at a restaurant that left two people dead is expected to recover from her wounds, police said Sunday.

Millie Cruz, 33, was in fair condition at Broward General Medical Center, awake and talking after being shot at the Shooter's bar late Saturday by a man police identified Sunday as Brian Sten, 37.

A bullet pierced Cruz's arm and lodged in her chest, said Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Mike Reed.

Sten fatally shot another man, Nicholas Gaglione, 57, before turning the gun on himself, Reed said.

Detectives on Sunday were trying to piece together the motive for the shooting, talking to friends and relatives of the victims and to people who were inside the popular waterfront bar at the time of the shootings.

Reed said Sten, Cruz and Gaglione all knew each other and were at the bar together when Sten suddenly pulled out a gun and began firing. Witnesses told police that the three were not arguing or behaving like there was anything wrong before the shootings, Reed said.

``We don't know why exactly it all occurred last night,'' Reed said. ``Several witnesses, including one of the bar staff, who witnessed most of the incident ... said that Sten just pulled out the gun and started shooting.''

Investigators were examining the relationship between Sten, Cruz, Gaglione and a woman whom police said is Sten's former girlfriend and a friend of Cruz, Reed said.

``We know the four of them all knew each other,'' Reed said. ``Sten and his ex were going through a rocky relationship. We don't know what occurred within the group.''

Reed declined to release the woman's name, but said she was not at the bar with the other three at the time of the shooting, Reed said.

Investigators said they did not find Sten had any past criminal records. He was recently fired by Miami-Dade police while training to become an officer, Reed said. Reed did not know the circumstances behind Sten's firing.
