That is some power, how can those tiny lowers handle jumping out of the water?

Skater30 01-17-2017 04:02 PM

I've confirmed these new motors though two different sources. I can't say for certain when they'll be available, but the picture you see of the 450R and 500R came from Mercury.

Don't worry Mike, I never ordered the 400Rs.........I knew to wait until I heard more. :D

Nate5.0 01-17-2017 04:39 PM

If true that is insane....the 450R I thought we would see in Miami but a 500R.....damn!

freshwaterfiend 01-17-2017 04:58 PM

Not totally buying the image. Look at the back of the cowl. The 5 in 450 doesn't match and you can see a ghost outline of the "R".

It'd be awesome if it happened but that image ain't them.

not so fast Phil keep in mind all this power is pretty linear through shafts (which easily handle the power) in a straight line only making a direction change a single time at the lower and in outdrives like bravos the upper is the weak link, the lowers are pretty durable, if the lowers on these are adapted XR stuff it would fall within range i would think.

The first set of 400Rs that went on Steve's blue 318 Skater had over 170 hours put on them in the first year without ANY failures - powerhead or gearcase.

You're not gonna order those little 450's are you ???

Hahaha, you know me better than that Steve! :D I'll be getting the first set of 500Rs to hit Skater - whenever that may be.

lake p.a.l. 01-17-2017 05:30 PM

I need to sell a LOT more golf carts. Any rumor/guess if the weight will change from 400R to 500R??

Taboma 01-17-2017 05:54 PM

Should be a software change with maybe some beefing-up of components for durability. I guess, no change in weight. Now, how about a 500# 350HP?

JIMKID Motorsports 01-17-2017 06:28 PM

Should be no weight change just a pulley and up the boost simple

abones 01-17-2017 07:15 PM

Maybe a pair of them there 500s on a purpose built 368?? If I was flush with cash I might try it. Wouldn't be the quickest but would fit my needs.

Wow, is it April 1st already???

PremierPOWER 01-17-2017 08:28 PM

I agree that these pictures are photoshopped. Zoom in on the rear and look at the 5 on the 450 and the 5 on the 500. The 5 on the 450 looks different than the 4 and 0 and the 5 on the 500 looks different than the 0's. I sure hope this is legit though

precisiondetails 01-17-2017 08:48 PM

Ya we will see. I'm more interested in seeing the NA DOHC motor that will make around 850-900. My guess is 2 year warranty and 500 hours before rebuild. It will do to the I/O market what the 400 has done.

PS- Dale those 500s on your boat will just be flat out awesome!

Wildman_grafix 01-17-2017 08:54 PM

It would be nice to see some of those 500's show up on performance V hulls. Twins on a 30ish boat would be a hard runner.

I wish the HP increase were real as well as available before my order is placed. According to the CNC verado prop guy at Mercury racing, it only a rumor. It only logical that they evolve this platform to higher levels since they are selling so many.

You can't just increase the boost by changing a pulley like someone said in this thread. The boost in controlled by the ECU and the SC is setup to run at full capacity and then boost limited in software. This ensures a constant 400 hp to the prop under most all conditions. The boost can be raised through an aftermarket tune already offered, but the design limits the increase to only 25hp. Going higher requires a larger whipple SC as well as other changes from Mercury.

Actually, I was just commenting on the fact that there will NOT be a Merc 500 Hp O/B this year, little birdie told me so :), so it's not a slight towards O/Bs, of which, we own 1 now. Our next boat will be either a diesel powered or O/B powered.....

Early verado lowers had issues at much lower ratings. I hope you're right though.

Double R Performance 01-18-2017 09:08 AM

I hate to throw a wet towel on this campfire. But this is a Photoshop deal. The last time Mercury had a big outboard release was the 400. I got four of them before the show. We have no 450's. We have no 500's. Be prepared to be disappointed at Miami if you actually think this is happening.

So you are saying they went straight to 600's?! :stooges:

Currently, JacosMarine has the price of the 400R at $27K+ for the 20" SM lower

[QUOTE=Matt Trulio;4520563]The rumor is incorrect, [url]https://speedonthewater.com/in

This is not a surprise - the rumor never was that they'd be unveiled at Miami, or be 2017 models. All I know is that I won't be ordering new Verados until my boat is ready for them. And even then, if it's late in the boating season and the new motors aren't out yet, I'll let it sit for the winter without motors in anticipation that they are released in 2018. Thanks though Matt for letting us know that they definitely won't be a 2017 model. It's sorta' what I figured, but wasn't positive - now we know for certain!

jadento 01-18-2017 11:55 AM

I have zero information about anything new from Mercury for Miami. But if I was a betting man, I would say there is absolutely NO way they would release both the 450 and 500 hp models at the same time. History does not support it and neither would any sales models...as in why would you compete them against each other with the same release date.

Double Rigged 01-18-2017 11:57 AM

Personally I do not believe it until NOLI reports it!!!!!!!!!!

He never commented LOL

hogie roll 01-18-2017 02:53 PM

I highly doubt it's true. Too close to the 400r release. Specific output is getting up there.

DFC 01-18-2017 10:06 PM

Anyone know the Verado block bore spacing? I haven't been able to find it, but I wonder if there is much room to bore it out beyond the existing 3.23" / 82mm bore...

hogie roll 01-19-2017 05:50 PM

ROS should be coming, which would be an upgrade for cats. I don't expect another HP jump soon. maybe when zuke has a 350-400 and yamaha improves theirs. Otherwise they own every transom between 300hp and 557hp!

Double C 01-19-2017 07:15 PM

Maybe the new 500R is going to be an inline 8, instead of an inline 6 :D

That would give a whole new meaning to "tower of power."
