This is very exciting to be racing in the Bahamas again.

FYI- anyone thinking of attending needs to secure flights ASAP......travel to/from is very limited (like 1 plane a day that seats 30-40 people).

The fast ferry stopped running last year and I don't think it ever restarted.

The host hotel has transportation from Port Everglades (i think a float plane) for the guests. We were also told a ferry was available from Lauderdale or Miami,

Float plane is a Cessna Caravan...8 passenger seats I think though Cessna does build them with more seats but they get sparse.

Big ferry is gone but local paper notes a smaller one restarted.

[url]http://touch.sun I was told that there is a possibility to charter more flights if you can get a group 8.

The twin prop plane I rented last was $2500 round trip and sat 7 passengers. Honestly it was like flying in a 1970's Japanese car!

Ft Lauderdale to Bimini was 31 minutes and we ran at about 1500 ft. They were navy blue/white Britten Norman's and the company was great to deal with!

We thought about it. Trust me. Even just pleasure cruising to bimini, racing, then cruise home. But if we blow a drive or something over there you're gonna have to come down and idle her home for us okay?

Those bravo blues, "offshore" boats can't even go to bimini.

Actually with Drive Guaridans, we have extremely good luck with our drive program. Blowing a drive was a bad example. Don't start the "it isnt offshore anymore" argument with me, you wont win :) Our throttleman has been racing since 1982. He's one of the few who has actually done both. The waves werent any bigger back then.

To be fair, it is really a lack of available anything in Bimini. Last summer we bought lobster tails from local fisherman, could not source one stick of butter on the whole island!
We ran into someone with a sportfish on the docks who sent us away with every ingredient we needed from butter to spices and the dozen lobster tails were great.

Bimini is small, even a understocked gas station convienence store on a remote highway in Kansas has more available than any grocery/general store on the island. So boat parts, even something as simple as a fuse or battery would be hard to come by. FYI, Cat Cay has a fully stocked gourmet grocery store but that is about 8 miles away by boat. We knew that when we bought the lobster but figured butter would be an easy find....it wasn't!

Call seatow and enjoy the slow ride home!

Jupiter Sunsation 03-01-2017 08:40 AM

Just to put the rustic element in the discussion, this is the main street in Bimini (Alicetown). The big resort is at the end of the street. Also note, just because they hang a "Heineken" banner, don't expect them to have any in stock.........ever. The marina ship stores usually have beer and ice though.

For any racers attending, the abandoned 33 Powerplay mentioned on here a few times is on South Bimini between the launch dock and the first liquor store on the left side (800 ft from the launch dock). Powerplay is up on blocks behind a house diagonally left of the liquor store (Booze and Screws is what it is called I think). You can see the boat from the main road

Well it was talk about bring back a race, all be it in the Keys.... Plus I am stuck in this miserable state (MI) and can't make it to the Key's. I know the reasons why it probably won't be back to Detroit, but a man can always dream ;-)
