life expectency of #3 and #6 drives
 

Ok so if your wanting to run big power bravo's or out and #3,5 or 6 drives are the way to go. what kind of life do these drives provide for a big power pleasure boat? do they need to be overhauled every 100, 200, 300 hrs? what about maintience? can this drives provide long term service without breaking you $wise or is it like the big power motors were they need overhauls every 50hrs or so. what about transmissions and problems and longevity, sounds like crash box's would be a pain. thanks in advance

Do a search in OSO as some of this has been discussed previously.
IMHO, it depends: how much horsepower, weight of the boat, how do you drive it, etc.?
For transmissions use Huber, BAM or the "shiftable" zero drag crash boxes from SCS.

All of the speedmasters allow you to swing a larger diameter prop and that can be an asset for some boats. But the speedy props are expensive.

hope your summer went well, saw you go by many times this year. as we talked last year im still toying with the idea of selling the fountain and going to a traditional style offshore. i do love the looks of the apache's but not sure if i want to deal with the headaches of big power. but if i do change boats im diffently going to look for something with bigger drives then bravo's. thats why im asking what kind of maintance and longevity they get from the bigger drives. i have heard that the 3's need to be overhauled at 250 hrs and im wondering if the 6's need that kind of attention or had i heard wrong.

Why don't you use a Drive with a 5 Year Warranty?

Very low maintenance, 5 year warranty and 1/2 the price of a #6. Transmission Huber with 2 year warranty for up to 800HP.
Why would you do anything else unless you like to contribute to the parts profit margin of the stern drives.

PULSE DRIVES ARENT PRACTICAL, THEY ARE UGLY AND ARENT SERVICED EVERYWHERE, BUY A # 6 AND BE DONE WITH IT

I tried a thread search, but it won't allow a word like "6" in the search-too short I guess.

a friend of mine put twin 800's in his 97 38 scarab. He ran it first with bravos and blew no less than 8 He's not even that hard on his stuff. He put in some of the big shaft 3's w/ the shorter lower end and bam trannies and have not had a single problem with the drives since. It's been about 2 years.

I ran 7 yrs with 1000 plus on threes with
1.50 gears. Now I am running 1.22 gears
and have one broken now, 20 hrs. This time
they are going to Dollar to get rebuilt.
