Inside SOTW Mag: Gentry Eagle Soars Again
Veteran marine writer Eric Colby tells the story of a vintage raceboat brought back to life, https://speedonthewater.com/in-the-n...le-soars-again.
For those who prefer to skip the intro, here is the direct download link for the January/February issue. |
That is not the original "Gentry Eagle".The original is in a slip in Ventura harbor and measures 110'x24'.
The boat pictured was one of Gentrys race boats but was never called the "Eagle". |
Nice resto! It was interesting to follow the progress dan did along the 2 last years!

The whole history is at Gentryeagle.com .
Vern Gilbert still maintains the boat for Norm Gentry. It takes 2 days to change batteries, charge them, bleed the fuel system and start it up after its been sitting for a while. |

The boat pictured was one of Gentrys race boats but was never called the "Eagle". As I wrote, the name is on the side of the original boat in question. That said, however, I have reached out to the author who is, in turn, checking with his sources. If there is an error we will correct it. |
Based on this article, https://speedonthewater.com/boat-res...eagle-and-more, I believe the original full name of the boat was Gentry Turbo Eagle. While I will call Archer Marine to confirm, I apologize in advance for whatever confusion the suspected omission of "Turbo" may have created. Stay tuned.

Upon further review—from Dan MacNamara at Archer Marine: "The boat was originally named the Gentry Eagle as displayed in the attached photo. Even in the the second paint job it was still badged as the, In the third paint scheme—as we have painted for scheme that was on it for the 1988 Worlds Championships—the name was changed to the Gentry Turbo Eagle."
We stand by the story as written and published. |
Matt is absolutely correct. The Gentry Turbo Eagle was the 1988 Superboat World Champion with triple Gentry Turbo engines and Sterndrives by Kiekhaefer. The 110 footer came later.
|
Gentry also used Eagle as part of the boat's name on his 35 foot Cigarette and his 36 foot Cigarette, both called American Eagle
