That is funny!

I would error on the heavy side if you are not exceeding the hitch rating. When the tongue weight is too light it gets ugly.

Every boat trailering guide I have read says 5-8%. Travel trailers and such are 8-10%. Don't remember the reason why, but it made sense. I think it has to do with the odd distribution of weight a boat has over the axles.

Ithink it may be those serge couplers with that much weight is scary !! Most are under sized anyway .

Hey strike , YOu say 5-7 I say 8-10 ......... How about 7.5 ?? Good enough ?? You may be right for boat trailers and if so it will be due to the serge coupler being the week point . I am a trailer dealer but not boat trailers . We do horse trailers , flat beds , dump trailers ,car trailers etc . They say 8-10 . But 7.5 will work !!

OK, I will split the difference. 7.75, just for sh*ts a giggles. I agree with 8-10 without the trailer weight.

My trailer right now is at 10% (800lbs). Buddy if mine has a bigger boat (about 1500-2000 lbs more) but his tongue weight is less. When you put my boat on his suburban it drags the ground compared to when his connected up. I have towed both trailers & both tow good. Going to trailer place in austin this weekend to see if they can fix this _____ trailer.

To little tongue wieght will cause her tail to wag back and forth and too much tongue weight will cause her tail to bounce up and down. I think you need to measure the angle of attack and see how she'll react.

Took boat & trailer to trailer place in Austin yesterdayl. One of the service techs & I started going over my trailer to see about fixing a few problems I was having with it. The service guy said he need to call the owner out to look at trailer & see best way to fix it. After the owner came out before we had a change to tell him my problems He nailed all of my problems & found a few that I did not ever know existed yet.

As we started talking about my tongue weight issue he was saying I need to have 10%. I told him I had 10% & thought it was too much. He then said if I wanted less he wanted a letter from me stating so since he did not want to deal with liability if I had an accident with trailer. He did not believe I was right on my 10% of togue weight & thought is was may more. He brought out his scale & boy was I wrong. Weight was 970. Only 170lbs more than what I thought. I left boat/trailer with them & they were going to figure out best way to fix it.
