How to read guage data from ECM on 1997 502 MPI???

I am building an NMEA 2000 network on my boat and in the process of changing the instrument panel gauges the new possibilities are making me wonder about no gauges. What I mean is the NMEA 2000 protocol can put up my gauge info on my display....... if the engine computer is compatible??????
This is where the big question comes into play. Will the ECM of these 1997 502 MPI engines put out data for NMEA 2000??
If not what protocol are they on? Is there a converter for these to put out display data of the engine info?
I can not find info, so far, that addresses this direction I am thinking to go.
What do you all know about this?

Mercruiser does not talk directly to NEMA, it must use a Merc gateway to transfer data. That said, with a 1997 motor, and not knowing your serial number, I will guess you have a MEFI 3 ECM and I don't think it will talk to NEMA

So do I understand this right that the Merc gateway for this MEFI 3 will not pass onto NMEA?

I have some j1939 to nema adapters if the engine has j1939 output

What does an adapter like this cost?
I am researching the whole approach of new gauges vs display data. J1939 has been around for a very long time so maybe the Merc stuff is there? That is part of what I don't know, what their communication protocol is?

BigSilverCat 04-09-2017 06:33 PM

Livorsi told me they would cost $250 each, they charged my credit card $450 each, so I'm not real sure what they cost?

I like how you're like, "meh, whatever"
First world problems

LoL

Been digging into this issue for a couple years, (not an expert) but the only system which transmits data that can be read by NEMA is via smartcraft. The MEFI 3 does not do smartcraft, it needs to be up to a 555 ECM. Now there may be some analog to digital (A/D) converters, which can translate the data, but I don't know of any

Interesting. So for my triples I guess that is one needed per engine. That starts to make price competition back towards new gauges vs going to all display.
If the Merc stuff is J1939 the Garmin has this protocol built into the 7600 series along with the NMEA 2000. I could run J1939 to the display if that is what Merc is.
Thanks for the info. The jury is still out on this project.

Does the Merc MEFI 3 use J1939? The Garmin system can use this protocol too.

Cannot say right not, have not done enough research. The J1939 uses a protocol which NEMA, 11783 and NEMA 2000 also can use. One is 8 bit and the other is 16 bit, but from initial thoughts is may work. The issue (IMO) you run into is that the MEFI 3 ECM does not talk to buss, so the interface of who is getting the correct readings may be an issue.

Exp: If the J1939/NEMA reads that the motor is overheating, does an alarm sound for the ECM (which protects the motor) or the NEMA display. Far out example, but hope the drift is caught

For Mercruiser -- ECM 555 and PCM 555 and PCM 09 and on yes , MEFI 1 and 2 and 3 nope.

Looks like you need a converter/gateway for older motors. I have MEFI3 motors myself and would love to do an in-dash plotter with engine monitoring.

Looks like this is the ticket.

Have never seen that before thanks for posting. I still would think if one would call Merc their answer might no as well for MEFI 1 -3. So that post above is good to know

Also found these that are more of a true "analog to digital" converter. Basically wire right to analog gauge senders and you can program the unit for each particular channel.

Thanks for all that info. I have something to go on and reading about these components I have a good idea where I need to go with my idea.
It looks like the converters are the real time data stream and the best for me. The updating type means processing and I don't want that in the way. Converting right off the sender to NMEA 2000 looks like the way I would go since it is more like live analog.
I still want to talk to Merc to understand more about their communication protocol. Finding that out could also help me to customize the conversions.
You guys have been an immense help. Thank you all big time !!!!

I have 05 500efi engines and I am in the same situation. I called Merc with the engine serial numbers and was told no smartcraft capability. I was looking into the Noland units as I am planning on keeping most gauges and running a Simrad Go7. I will watch to see what you decide on.

I like the look of traditional gauges but the graphics of some of the display units have a very real look just like the real thing. Once I talk with Merc I will know the comm protocol and know how to move the data for gauges. Another benefit of going network is getting a lot more data than just simple instrumentation. That is very practical to me and makes me lean in the direction of dual displays for everything.

Can anyone verify what protocol the Mercury (Motorola) ECM555 communicates via. Is it the J1939?

Pretty sure that would be the CAN protocol. The Merc gateway mentioned earlier converts CAN to NMEA 2000.

What do you all know about this?

try contacting kidturbo on here, he has done a lot of research on analog to nmea and produced some adapters.

here is one of his products Attachment 575749
