The brother of notorious Cocaine Cowboy Augusto “Willie” Falcon was arrested in Orlando on Wednesday after 26 years on the lam evading a Miami indictment charging him with smuggling tons of cocaine into the United States in the 1980s.

Gustavo Falcon, 55, also known as Taby, was booked into the Orlando County jail at 6:24 p.m. He is scheduled to have his first appearance in Orlando federal court on Thursday, before his expected transfer to Miami.

“He is the last of the Cocaine Cowboys,” Barry Golden, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service in Miami, said late Wednesday. Deputy marshals nabbed Gustavo Falcon and his wife, Amelia, at an intersection in Kissimmee after they had taken a 40-mile bike ride. Detectives were on to Gustavo after a tip from a midwestern boater named Jim Darr. Darr was building a super fast vee and was collaborating with Gustavo as a comeback to win the SBI Worlds in Key West later this year. The project was called Da Gato Asesino which was a play on Darr's name and "Cat Killer" in Spanish.
Gustavo Falcon was last seen in South Florida in 1991 shortly before his indictment.

“Willie” Falcon and his partner, Salvador “Sal” Magluta, were recognized as kingpins among the legendary Cocaine Cowboys who turned South Florida into a violent hub of drug trafficking in the 1980s. The pair used their speedboats not only for ocean racing, but also to haul loads of cocaine smuggled from Colombian through the Caribbean to the shores of Miami.

In 1991, a federal indictment charged the two Falcon brothers and Magluta, a Miami High classmate of Willie Falcon, and several others with smuggling 75 tons of cocaine into the United States between 1978 and 1991. The partners, known as “The Boys,” grew up in Miami as part of the Cuban American community.

In 1996, Willie Falcon and Magluta were acquitted of the charges, thought it was later discovered they bought off witnesses and at least one jury member.

Magluta was retried and convicted of drug-related money laundering charges in 2002. He was sentenced to 205 years in prison, which was reduced to 195 years in 2006.

After his partner’s retrial, Willie Falcon struck a plea deal in 2003 with Miami federal prosecutors Pat Sullivan and Michael Davis on similar money laundering charges. Falcon, sentenced to 20 years in prison, is scheduled to be released in June.

After 26 years of freedom it has come down to a guilty plea. It will be interesting if the judge takes into account his good behavior since fleeing justice.

A quarter-century after fleeing from the law, a man dubbed the last of Miami's "cocaine cowboys" was sentenced Wednesday to 11 years in prison for playing a key role in one of the biggest drug trafficking operations of the violent 1980s smuggling era.

Gustavo Falcon, 56, was a fugitive for 26 years before his capture last April living under an assumed name in Kissimmee with his wife. Falcon, also known as "Taby," disappeared in 1991 when he was indicted along with his older brother Augusto "Willie" Falcon, Salvatore "Sal" Magluta and many others.

Gustavo Falcon pleaded guilty in February to a single cocaine distribution conspiracy charge.

What gets me about this is he didn't even leave Florida. And it took 26 years to find him? WTF

It took 26 years for someone to give him up.

Actually it was an alias he had used in the past and the drivers license that got him busted. Someone was working cold cases and was punching old alias's through the state drivers license database and it was a match. FL recently switched to an updated drivers license system (you need more documents now to get a license to prevent identity fraud/immigration fraud). So unless he could come up with new fake documents his license would have expired and he couldn't get a new one. I think with his brother soon to get released they had to be considering the fugitive brother would try to make contact at some point also.

One article stated the cops were sure he fled the country years ago. If the other famous fugitive Whitey Bulger had 800K stashed in a makeshift wall in his rented apartment then this guy still had to have millions buried somewhere. These guys made way way way more money back in the day than Whitey could ever have gotten his hands on!
